Habs Lose A Wild One To The Flyers

Montreal heads into Newark after a wild 5-4 shootout loss to the Flyers, a game where they spotted Philadelphia three goals in the opening eight minutes before roaring back with four straight in the second period. Kirby Dach scored twice, Nick Suzuki extended his point streak to 12 games with a power-play goal, and rookie Ivan Demidov added a goal and an assist. Even in defeat, the Canadiens showed resilience, clawing back from an early hole and nearly stealing the win. That kind of fight has defined their season so far, as they sit at 9-3-1 and near the top of the Atlantic Division.

The Canadiens’ offense has been balanced and dangerous. Suzuki has been the engine, piling up 19 points already, while Cole Caufield continues to be a threat every time he touches the puck. Demidov has quickly established himself as one of the league’s most exciting rookies, and his chemistry with Suzuki and Caufield has given Montreal a top line that can match up with anyone. The power play has been sharp, converting twice against Philadelphia, and their ability to generate offense from the blue line with Lane Hutson and Noah Dobson adds another layer to their attack.

Defensively, Montreal has been inconsistent, as seen in the Flyers game where they allowed three goals on the first six shots. Sam Montembeault settled in to make 38 saves, but shaky starts have been an issue. The Canadiens will need to be sharper against a Devils team that thrives on speed and transition. Clearing rebounds, staying disciplined in their own zone, and avoiding costly penalties will be key. If Montreal can tighten up defensively while continuing to ride their hot top line, they’ll have a strong chance to bounce back on the road.

Devils Have Bad Outing Against The Ducks

The Devils return home after a tough West Coast swing that ended with a 4-1 loss to Anaheim. Fatigue was a factor, but New Jersey still sits at 9-4-0 and atop the Metropolitan Division. The bright spot has been Jack Hughes, who leads the team with 10 goals and 16 points, and Dawson Mercer, who has been on a tear with eight goals and a four-game point streak. Playing at Prudential Center has been a different story altogether—the Devils are a perfect 5-0-0 at home, and they’ll look to keep that streak alive against Montreal.

Offensively, New Jersey has plenty of weapons. Hughes’ creativity and speed drive the attack, while Jesper Bratt and Timo Meier provide steady production on the wings. Nico Hischier has chipped in with three goals and seven assists, giving the Devils depth down the middle. Their power play has been lethal, converting at over 31 percent, with Hughes and Mercer both thriving in man-advantage situations. When they’re rolling, the Devils can overwhelm opponents with pace and puck movement, and that will be their blueprint against Montreal’s defense.

Defensively, the Devils have been up and down, allowing 40 goals through 13 games. Injuries have forced lineup shuffles, with Brett Pesce sidelined and others stepping into bigger roles. Still, the goaltending tandem of Jacob Markstrom and Jake Allen has provided stability, with Markstrom stealing the show against the Kings earlier in the trip with 43 saves. At home, the Devils have been much tighter, feeding off the energy of the crowd and limiting opponents’ chances. Against Montreal’s dangerous top line, New Jersey will need to stay disciplined in the neutral zone and avoid giving Suzuki and Caufield space to operate.

Montreal Canadiens vs New Jersey Devils Pick

Canadiens vs Devils Moneyline Pick

  • New Jersey -151 (3 Units)

Backing New Jersey here makes sense given how dominant they’ve been at home. The Devils are a perfect 5-0-0 at Prudential Center, and that edge has been fueled by their speed and depth up front. Jack Hughes has been electric, already in double digits for goals, while Dawson Mercer has been on a scoring tear to give them another dangerous weapon. Add in the steady production from Jesper Bratt and Timo Meier, and New Jersey has multiple lines that can pressure Montreal’s defense shift after shift. Against a Canadiens team that has shown a tendency to start slow, the Devils’ ability to strike early could tilt this matchup in their favor.

Defensively, New Jersey has been far more reliable on home ice, and that’s a big reason to lean their way. Jacob Markstrom has given them stability in net, and the blue line—led by Dougie Hamilton and Jonas Siegenthaler—has been better at limiting high-danger chances in front of the crease. Montreal’s top line of Suzuki, Caufield, and Demidov is dangerous, but the Devils have the depth and structure to contain them over 60 minutes. With their perfect home record, offensive firepower, and steadier defensive play in Newark, New Jersey looks well-positioned to take control of this one.

Canadiens vs Devils Over/Under Pick

  • Over 6 (1 Unit)

The over 6 feels like the right angle because both Montreal and New Jersey bring plenty of offensive firepower and have shown defensive lapses that can turn games into track meets. The Canadiens just played a 5-4 shootout against Philadelphia, with Suzuki, Caufield, and Demidov driving a top line that’s been tough to contain, while the Devils have Hughes, Mercer, and Bratt fueling a power play clicking over 30 percent. With Montreal prone to slow starts and New Jersey thriving in transition, this matchup has all the ingredients for momentum swings and multiple scoring bursts that push the total past six goals.
