The Devils’ road trip has been bumpy
The New Jersey Devils will wrap up their four-game road trip on Sunday night. Before Saturday’s clash against the LA Kings, the Devils suffered an 8-4 defeat at the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday and a 5-2 loss at the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.
That heavy loss against the Avs put an end to the Devils’ eight-game winning streak. New Jersey nearly erased a 5-0 deficit, but the Avalanche took a staggering 42 shots toward Jacob Markstrom and fully deserved to win.
Against the Sharks, the Devils were down 3-0 and 5-1. Jake Allen took a loss, allowing five goals on 28 shots. Allen is now 5-1-0 with a 2.39 GAA and a .906 save percentage in 2025-26, while Markstrom is 2-2-0 with an ugly 5.13 GAA and a .830 save percentage.
The Devils were second in the Metropolitan Division on Saturday morning, two points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins. New Jersey was third in the NHL in goals for (3.73 per game) and 20th in goals against (3.18).
RW Connor Brown is out.
The Ducks aim for their third straight W
The Anaheim Ducks have won four of their previous five games overall. After a couple of wins at the Nashville Predators 5-2 and the Boston Bruins 7-5 and a 4-3 loss at the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Ducks beat the Florida Panthers 3-2 in a shootout and the Detroit Red Wings 5-2.
Last Friday, the Ducks outshot the Red Wings 32-30 at Honda Center. Anaheim went 1-for-5 with the man advantage, while Detroit converted just one of its seven power-play opportunities. Troy Terry led the charge for Anaheim with two goals and an assist, while Leo Carlsson scored a goal and made three dishes.
Lukas Dostal has guarded the cage in each of Anaheim’s last three outings. The 25-year-old netminder is 4-3-1 with a 2.74 GAA and a .909 save percentage this season, while Petr Mrazek is 2-0-0 with a hideous 5.52 GAA and a .831 save percentage.
The Ducks score 3.60 goals per game (8th in the NHL) and surrender 3.30 goals in return (23rd). They are third in the Pacific Division, two points behind the Vegas Golden Knights and one point behind the LA Kings.
D Radko Gudas is day-to-day.
Devils vs. Ducks Pick
Moneyline Pick for Devils vs. Ducks
- Anaheim Ducks (5 units)
I have to take the Ducks at plus money in this spot. Their offense has been playing very well of late, and Lukas Dostal has been solid in the net. On the other side, the Devils will have to deal with fatigue on the second night of a back-to-back.
Moreover, the Devils cannot count on Brett Pesce (upper body), who’s a true anchor on their blueline. Without Pesce, the Devils’ defense has fallen apart in those two losses against Colorado and San Jose. New Jersey might miss winger Connor Brown (G5, A1), while Anaheim is without center Mikael Granlund (G2, A6).
Over/Under Pick for Devils vs. Ducks
- Over 6.5 (5 units)
As I mentioned, the Ducks’ offense has done a great job lately. Anaheim has scored 22 goals over its previous five outings. However, the Ducks are allowing too many shots (30.7 per game). I trust Lukas Dostal to play well, but he won’t be able to shut the Devils down.
The Devils will find a way to score. They lead the NHL in power-play percentage (10-for-31). Their defense will be properly tested, and whoever gets the start in the crease will have a tall task to slow the Ducks down. Give me the over.
