The New Jersey Devils face the Utah Mammoth with both teams in the middle of rough stretches. The Devils are 19-14-1 and with only three wins in their last 10 games, they are barely clinging to the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Mammoth are 17-16-3 and with only three wins in their last seven games, they have fallen out of playoff position in the Western Conference. Who will win this game? Devils have been let down by awful offense

The Devils have fallen apart latest with their offense letting them down, scoring only 2.82 goals per game with only three goals in their last two games. Jesper Bratt and Nico Hischier have combined for 16 goals and 39 assists but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only four active skaters have eight goals or more, and opponents can limit the top-heavy offense as a result.

The offense has let the Devils down but the defense has also struggled, allowing 3.06 goals per game. Luke Hughes and Brenden Dillon have combined for 3.1 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. Additionally, goaltender Jacob Markstrom has played poorly in his recent starts, allowing 11 goals in his last four.

Key injury report for Devils

  • Timo Meier is on injured reserve. Has 11 goals and 13 assists.
  • Arseny Gritsyuk is on injured reserve. Has seven goals and nine assists.
  • Simon Nemec is on injured reserve. Has seven goals and 11 assists.
  • Jack Hughes (hand) remains out for a few weeks. Has 10 goals and 10 assists.

Utah hopes offense keeps them in the playoff hunt

The Mammoth are having a rocky season and hope the offense turns the season around as they are averaging 3.08 goals per game with 15 goals in their last four games. Nick Schmaltz and Clayton Keller have scored 23 goals and 38 assists while JJ Peterka and Dylan Guenther have combined for 29 goals and 25 assists to add depth to the forward unit.

The offense has carried them but the defense has also stepped up, allowing only 2.94 goals per game. John Marino and Ian Cole have combined for 5.4 defensive point shares while Nate Schmidt and Mikhail Sergachev have combined for 3.8 defensive point shares to add depth to the unit. In addition, goaltender Karel Vejmelka is coming off an impressive start where he stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced.

Key injury report for Utah

  • Logan Cooley (lower body) was placed on injured reserve. Had 14 goals and nine assists.

Devils vs Mammoth Pick

Money Line Pick For Devils vs Mammoth

  • Mammoth (-130) (4 units)

The Devils have struggled across the board lately, and I see the Mammoth stepping up and taking over this game from the first period. The Mammoth, who average 3.08 goals per game, should create plenty of scoring chances against the Devils, who allow 3.06 goals per game, with Nick Schmaltz, Clayton Keller, and the rest of the forward unit carrying the puck into the offensive zone while creating open shots with quick passes. The Mammoth, who have allowed only 2.94 goals per game, should limit the Devils offense, which averages only 2.82 goals per game, with John Marino and Ian Cole creating turnovers in all three zones while goaltender Karel Vejmelka blanks the shots on the net. The Mammoth should win the game with a strong performance on their home ice.

Take the Mammoth money line as home Favorites.

Over/Under Pick For Devils vs Mammoth

  • Under 5.5 (5 Units)

The Devils have fallen apart on offense, and I see this game being a low-scoring one from the opening puck drop. The Devils should limit the Mammoth offense with Luke Hughes, Brenden Dillon, and the rest of the defensive unit creating turnovers in the defensive zone while goaltender Jacob Markstrom blanks the shots on the net. The Mammoth look to eliminate a Devils offense that has scored only three goals in the last two games with Karel Vejmelka building off a start where he’s allowed only one goal and blanking the shots on the net while Ian Cole, Mikhail Sergachev, John Marino, and the rest of the defensive unit forcing turnovers in the neutral zone and defensive zone to help him out. The Under should cover in a low-scoring game with both defenses stepping up.

Take the Under on 5.5 goals.

The Devils face the Mammoth in a matchup between two borderline playoff teams looking to improve on rocky seasons.
