Islanders Seeking Third Straight Win Over Bruins

New York mustered a point in their game against the Flyers on the road Saturday, but couldnโ€™t get the other Saturday night as they fell in a shootout. The Islanders entered Monday tied for fifth in the Metropolitan Division with a 4-3-1 record, seven points behind the Devils for the top spot in the division. New York is tied for 2nd in goals per game as they average 3.75 goals per contest. The Islanders are 24th in goals against per game as they allow 3.38 goals a night. New York is 21st in power play success as they convert 18.5% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Islanders are 20th in penalty killing as they successfully get through 74.1% of their shorthanded situations this year.

Against Philadelphia, 65 minutes wasnโ€™t enough to determine a victor and the Islanders ultimately fell in a shootout. The Islanders were outshot 8-4 in the opening period but skated off with a 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes of play. Simon Holmstrom opened the scoring with his second goal of the season, shorthanded, at 9:51 off an assist from Jean-Gabriel Pageau. In the second period, New York owned a 13-8 shot advantage with both teams scoring once, leaving them with a 2-1 lead at the second intermission. Anthony Duclair made it a 2-0 game with his second goal of the year at 6:15 off assists from Marshall Warren and Anders Lee. The Islanders gave up a goal later in the period to trim their lead in half. In the third period, New York was outshot 9-5 and outscored 2-1 to send the game to overtime knotted at three. After giving up the tying goal early in the period, Maxim Tsyplakov scored his first goal of the year at 4:21 with assists going to Warren and Tony DeAngelo for a 3-2 Islanders lead. They gave up the tying goal just over three minutes later. In overtime, the Islanders owned a 4-1 advantage in shots with neither team scoring. During the shootout, Holmstrom tallied for the Islanders but the Flyers scored twice to end up with the shootout loss. Ilya Sorokin made 23 saves for the Islanders in a game where both teams finished with 26 shots on goal, in the loss. Sorokin (2-3-1, 3.70 GAA, .876 save percentage) is slated to be between the pipes here.

Pierre Engvall (ankle) is expected to miss the rest of the season. Goaltender Semyon Varlamov (knee) is out indefinitely. Defenseman Ethan Bear (undisclosed) is out until late October, while Alexander Romanov (upper body) is out until early November. Right wing Max Shabanov (undisclosed) is out on Tuesday.

Boston Closing Back-to-Back Set

Boston was on the road against Ottawa Monday night so they are playing the second game of a back-to-back here. The Bruins entered Monday 4-6-0 on the season and stood tied for seventh in the Atlantic Division, six points behind Montreal for the top spot. Boston is 15th in the league in scoring as they average 3.20 goals per game on the season. The Bruins are tied for 25th in goals against as they allow 3.50 goals per contest. Boston is 19th in power play success as they have cashed in 19.4% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Bruins are 8th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 87.2% of their shorthanded situations on the season.

Against Colorado Saturday, Boston managed to take down the Avalanche to pick up two points in the standings, snapping a six-game slide. The Bruins were outshot 11-8 in the opening 20 minutes but skated off with a 2-1 lead on the scoreboard. After giving up the opening goal of the game, Viktor Arvidsson tied the game with his first goal of the year at 14:16, with assists going to Mason Lohrei and Casey Mittelstadt. Only 39 seconds later, Michael Eyssimont gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead with his second goal of the year at 14:55 off assists from Tanner Jeannot and Lohrei. In the second period, Boston was outshot 12-7 but scored the only goal of the period to lead 3-1 at the second intermission. Morgan Geekie gave the Bruins a two-goal lead with his sixth goal of the season at 19:55, with assists going to David Pastrnak and Lohrei. In the third period, Boston was outshot 10-4 and outscored 1-,0 yet managed to emerge with the victory. Jeremy Swayman made 31 saves for the Bruins, who were outshot 33-19, in the win. With Swayman going Monday in Ottawa, Joonas Korpisalo (1-3-0, 4.03 GAA, .845 save percentage) is expected to get the start in goal here.

Defensemen Jordan Harris (undisclosed) and Hampus Lindholm (undisclosed) are both out indefinitely.

Islanders vs. Bruins Pick

Islanders vs. Bruins Moneyline Pick

  • Islanders -130

Boston had dropped six straight and are playing their third game in four nights here. Korpisalo has been less than inspiring in his outings between the pipes this season, which should play to the strengths of the visitors. New York is tied for second in the league in goals per game this season as they are denting the twine with abandon in the early going. The Islanders have to be better in their own end than weโ€™ve said at this point of the year. Boston is going to be dealing with fatigue, having to fly back home after playing the Senators on Monday night. Until we see some sign of competent play from Korpisalo, you have to fade the Bruins here. New York skates away with a road win in this contest.

Islanders vs. Bruins Over/Under Pick

  • Over 5.5 (-125)

New York enters this game having gone over the total in seven of their eight games this season. The Islanders have an average of 7.13 goals per game this season, and that number bumps up slightly to 7.33 goals per game on the road. Boston has split their first 10 games on the year entering Mondayโ€™s game against the Senators. The Bruins have an average of 6.70 goals per game on the year, and that number climbs to seven goals per game at the TD Garden. Weโ€™ve seen the over post a 7-2-1 mark in their last 10 meetings, and with both teams struggling to keep the puck out of their own net, this game winds up over the total.
