The 2025-26 NHL season goes on Sunday, November 16, with the New York Islanders facing off against the Colorado Avalanche in the cross-conference showdown at Ball Arena in Denver, CO, and we’ve got you covered with our Islanders vs. Avalanche prediction.
The Islanders meet the Avalanche for the first time this season. In 2024-25, the Islanders swept their two-game set against the Avs (6-2 and 5-2), but New York has only won three of its previous nine contests versus Colorado.
Let’s look closer at this Islanders vs. Avalanche prediction, one of our NHL picks for Sunday’s card. The Avalanche open as firm -255 moneyline favorites with a total of 6.5 goals, and the puck drop is set at 9:00 PM ET.
The Islanders aim for their fifth straight W
Sunday’s clash at Ball Arena will be the New York Islanders’ fifth straight outing away from home, and they will try to extend their winning streak to five games. After a 5-0 blanking of the NY Rangers, the Islanders have won three straight contests in overtime, beating the New Jersey Devils 3-2, the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3, and the Utah Mammoth 3-2.

Ilya Sorokin has been in the crease against the Rangers, Devils, and Golden Knights, while David Rittich guarded the cage against the Mammoth this past Friday. The Islanders overcame a 2-1 deficit in Salt Lake City, and Rittich turned 27 of 29 shots aside.
Sorokin is expected to return to the crease on Sunday, and the 30-year-old netminder carries a 6-4-2 record with a 2.90 GAA and a .898 save percentage. He’s done a great job lately, allowing nine goals over his previous five starts (4-0-1 record).
The Islanders are 15th in the NHL in goals against (3.11 per game) and ninth in goals for (3.33). Center Bo Horvat leads the way for New York with 12 goals and 11 assists, while rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer has amassed seven goals and eight assists.

The Avalanche continue to roll
The Colorado Avalanche have only dropped one of their previous eight games overall. After a shocking 3-2 overtime defeat at the San Jose Sharks, the Avs have won five straight contests, including a 9-1 dismantling of the reigning Stanley Cup vice-champions, the Edmonton Oilers.
The Avs are coming off Thursday’s 6-3 home victory over the Buffalo Sabres. Colorado outshot Buffalo 34-21 on the night, and forward Martin Necas led the charge with a couple of goals and assists. Mackenzie Blackwood posted 18 saves and advanced to 2-0-1 on the season.
Scott Wedgewood is expected to guard the cage on Sunday night. The 33-year-old goalie has been sensational this season, posting a 10-1-2 record with a 2.26 GAA and a .913 save percentage. Across three starts this month, Wedgewood has recorded a shiny 1.33 GAA and a .952 save percentage.
The Avs lead the NHL in both goals for (4.11 per game) and goals against (2.44). Center Nathan MacKinnon has already accounted for 14 goals and 19 assists, while Necas (G12, A12) and defenseman Cale Makar (G6, A18) have recorded 24 points each. The Avs cannot count on winger Valeri Nichushkin (G5, A7) due to a lower-body injury.
Islanders vs. Avalanche Pick
Spread Pick for Islanders vs. Avalanche
- Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (5 units)
The Islanders are on a great run, but they will slow down eventually. This is a tough spot for the Islanders. As I mentioned, each of their previous three games has gone past regulation. Now, they have to deal with the arguably best team in the league at the moment.
Scott Wedgewood is undefeated in five straight starts, and he’s allowed just five goals during that stretch. Nathan MacKinnon is on an 11-game point streak, which is ridiculous, and Martin Necas has amassed four goals and four assists across six appearances in November. I’m backing the Avs to extend their winning streak and beat the puckline in the process.
Over/Under Pick for Islanders vs. Avalanche
- Over 6.5 (5 units)
The Islanders can score. Their offense has done a good job thus far. Bo Horvat is on an eight-game point streak, and the 18-year-old Matthew Schaefer has been outstanding through his first 18 games.
Ilya Sorokin has improved a lot over the past two weeks, but the Islanders’ blueline will have a mountain to climb in this matchup. The Avs have scored a whopping 41 goals over their previous eight outings, and their offense is looking scary at the moment.
I expect to see a high-scoring encounter between a couple of in-form teams. Seven of the previous eight meetings between the Islanders and Avalanche have gone over the total.
