New York Islanders vs Toronto Maple Leafs Picks, Prediction, Odds, and Line Movement for Saturday October 17 2026

The Islanders and Maple Leafs meet at Scotiabank Arena with neither team completely satisfied by its opening stretch. New York is 3-3-1 and Toronto is 3-3-2, but the records obscure a sharp contrast in how these teams have been playing. The Islanders have defended exceptionally well while the Maple Leafs have been dangerous offensively and unreliable around their own net. With Toronto priced as a moderate favorite, New York's ability to control the pace makes the road underdog a legitimate choice rather than a wager based simply on the plus sign.
The Islanders are coming off a 2-1 shootout loss in Ottawa on Thursday. That result shows the downside of their style: even a strong defensive performance can yield only a point when goals are difficult to manufacture. Toronto's most recent game was a 5-4 overtime loss to Buffalo after the Leafs held a 4-2 third-period lead. Toronto also fell 5-4 to Utah earlier in the week, so the late-game management concern is grounded in actual recent results, not a vague reputation.

New York Islanders Betting Analysis

The Islanders' lineup begins with Matias Maccelli, Bo Horvat and Simon Holmstrom, while Brayden Schenn, Cal Ritchie and Victor Eklund supply a different blend of size and playmaking. Anthony Duclair and Kyle Palmieri help with secondary finishing. The offense is not as consistently explosive as Toronto's, but New York can create its most important opportunities by extending offensive-zone shifts and forcing the Leafs to defend beyond their preferred rotation. The game plan should center on patience, controlled puck support and disciplined positioning when the Leafs turn up the pace.
The Islanders are without Mathew Barzal and Alexander Romanov, significant absences that limit both creativity and defensive depth. Nevertheless, Ilya Sorokin has been excellent and is considered likely to start after taking the starter's crease at morning skate. His early line stands at 3-2-0, 1.81 goals against and a .934 save percentage. New York also has one of the league's best goals-against records through seven games. That strength gives the Islanders a real chance to keep Matthews and Nylander from transforming the matchup into a wide-open scoring contest.

Toronto Maple Leafs Betting Analysis

Auston Matthews remains the centerpiece of Toronto's offense, with William Nylander, Kirill Marchenko and Easton Cowan giving the club multiple finishers. Matthews has a six-game point streak, and Toronto has continued generating chances even while losing close games. Marchenko scored a hat trick in Thursday's defeat against Buffalo. That production makes the Islanders' upset case risky, especially if Toronto gets repeated power plays or forces Sorokin to handle one-timers from the slot.
Toronto's problems are structural and personnel-related. John Tavares is week to week with a lower-body injury, while Chris Tanev, Max Domi and Dakota Joshua are unavailable. Sergei Bobrovsky is confirmed to start, but his early results have been inconsistent at 1-2-2 with a 3.33 goals-against average and .896 save percentage. The Leafs have allowed three or more goals in seven of eight games. Their excellent special teams can counter that weakness, but they cannot expect to win every night by getting into a special-teams exchange.

Islanders vs Maple Leafs Matchup and Odds

The matchup depends on whether New York can suppress Toronto's transition chances and keep Matthews from dictating defensive matchups. The Islanders' depth is thinner without Barzal, so it is vital for Horvat, Maccelli and the supporting lines to win enough possession to rest the defense. Toronto wants a quicker game in which its finishing talent outweighs the occasional defensive mistake. New York has more incentive to turn this into a positional battle decided by one or two goals.
The opening market made the Islanders roughly +121 and Toronto -133. Later comparisons showed New York around +114 to +116 with Toronto near -135 to -141. The Islanders' available return has therefore tightened slightly, making price discipline important. New York at +115 implies a break-even threshold of about 46.5 percent, reasonable for a team receiving strong goaltending against a favorite with several injuries and repeated trouble protecting leads. A much shorter underdog price would change the calculation.
Toronto's penalty kill has been excellent and its power play dangerous, meaning New York cannot afford careless penalties. At even strength, however, the Islanders can take advantage of a Leafs defense that has conceded 30.5 shots per game and struggled to protect the middle for complete games. Sorokin offers a better established current performance level than Bobrovsky's opening numbers, while the absence of Tavares takes a reliable puck-control option out of Toronto's middle six. That combination narrows the matchup enough to justify the underdog.

Best Bet

Best Bet: New York Islanders moneyline at +115 or better. Toronto has the greater offensive ceiling, but New York brings the more reliable defensive and goaltending profile into a matchup where the favorite has struggled to close games. The Islanders need disciplined five-on-five play and enough scoring support for Sorokin. The price is essential: this is a competitive upset proposition, not a declaration that Toronto lacks dangerous forwards. Prediction: New York Islanders 3, Toronto Maple Leafs 2.
