New York Rangers vs Detroit Red Wings Picks, Prediction, Odds, and Line Movement for Friday October 2 2026

The New York Rangers make a quick turnaround Friday night when they visit the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. New York is already playing its third game of the young season, while Detroit is making its 2026-27 debut. That creates an unusual early-season matchup between a Rangers team that has already experienced two very different games and a Red Wings club trying to establish its identity without one of its most important forwards.

Rangers Trying to Build on Big Road Response

New York opened the season with a 3-0 loss in Boston, then answered immediately with a 5-1 victory at Tampa Bay on Thursday. That response matters because the Rangers showed considerably more pace and finishing ability in their second game. They also enter Detroit with an unusual goaltending wrinkle. Igor Shesterkin started Thursday, so Dylan Garand is expected to get the assignment Friday with backup Joonas Korpisalo sidelined by a lower-body injury.
The Rangers' forward group has a different look this season. Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafreniere remain prominent offensive pieces, while J.T. Miller gives the middle of the lineup another proven scorer and playmaker. Pavel Dorofeyev, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Eeli Tolvanen add shooting depth. On defense, Adam Fox remains the player most capable of turning a defensive stop into immediate offense.
The concern is obvious: New York is playing on consecutive nights and will not have Shesterkin starting. Detroit should have the fresher legs, and John Gibson is expected to start for the Red Wings. The Rangers therefore need to avoid an open first period that forces Garand to make repeated difficult saves before he settles into the game.

Detroit Opens Without Dylan Larkin

Detroit begins the season with a significant hole in the lineup. Dylan Larkin is out with an upper-body injury and is expected to miss at least the first two games. That removes the Red Wings' captain and one of their most reliable transition players from an offense that will instead lean more heavily on Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond.
Andrew Copp is projected to center the top line between DeBrincat and Raymond. Detroit also has J.T. Compher, Marco Kasper and Viktor Arvidsson available to spread offense through the lineup. Moritz Seider remains the foundation of the defense, but Simon Edvinsson's contract situation has left another important opening on the blue line. Albert Johansson is expected to skate with Seider, while Anton Johansson is set to make his NHL debut alongside Justin Faulk.
The home opener should give Detroit plenty of energy, but Larkin's absence is difficult to dismiss against a Rangers team that has generally handled this matchup well in recent meetings. New York has won eight of the last nine meetings and four straight games in Detroit. Historical results do not decide Friday's game, but they reinforce that the Rangers have repeatedly found ways to create offense against this opponent.

Keys to the Game

New York's challenge is managing fatigue without becoming passive. A back-to-back team can get into trouble when it retreats too early and allows the opponent to build speed through the neutral zone. The Rangers are better served using their skill to possess the puck and make Detroit defend. Fox's ability to move the puck cleanly is particularly important because controlled exits can reduce the workload on Garand.
Detroit should test the young goalie immediately. Without Larkin, the Red Wings may not create as much naturally through the middle, so traffic and second chances become more important. DeBrincat's shot is dangerous from several areas, and Raymond can create opportunities off possession. If Detroit gets an early power play, that is its best chance to put New York under immediate pressure.

Rangers vs Red Wings Prediction

Detroit has the rest and goaltending advantages, which explains why the Red Wings are priced as a modest home favorite. The Rangers, however, are getting plus money after scoring five goals in Tampa Bay, and Detroit is opening without Larkin while working through changes on defense. That makes New York the more attractive side at the current number.
Garand is the biggest risk in the wager. If the young goalie struggles early, Detroit has enough finishing talent to punish New York. But the Rangers have the deeper group of established offensive creators, and their special teams and puck-moving defense can help compensate for the disadvantage in net. At a plus price, the risk is worth accepting.
Best Bet: New York Rangers moneyline at +105 or better.
Prediction: New York Rangers 4, Detroit Red Wings 3.
