History will be made in the Sunshine State as the New York Rangers take on the Florida Panthers at loanDepot park on Friday at 8:00pm ET. This marks the first-ever outdoor NHL game in Florida, as the 2026 Winter Classic transforms the home of the Miami Marlins into a hockey oasis.

The Rangers (19-18-5, 10-9-2 Away) are desperate to break a three-game losing streak, most recently falling 6-3 to Washington on New Year's Eve. The defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers (21-15-3, 10-7-2 Home) look to bounce back from a 3-2 overtime loss to Montreal. Florida enters as the favorite at -142, with the total set at 5.5 goals. Rangers seeking stability in the Miami heat

New York enters this historic showcase at a crossroads, having struggled through a difficult December stretch. The Rangers' identity remains tied to their special teams and elite goaltending, but their 5-on-5 scoring has dipped, resulting in a 1-3-1 record over their last five games. Playing in an outdoor environment—especially one as unique as Miami—often favors veteran teams that can simplify their game, which Peter Laviolette will surely emphasize tonight.

The offense is centered around Artemi Panarin, who leads the team with 41 points (14G, 27A). Panarin has been the model of consistency, though the Rangers have missed the secondary punch of players like Mika Zibanejad during this recent slide. The power play, converting at 19.8%, will be a critical factor; if the Rangers can draw penalties against an aggressive Florida forecheck, Panarin’s vision could be the difference-maker on the outdoor ice.

Defensively, the Rangers are missing rookie Noah Laba and veteran Conor Sheary, forcing a younger bottom-six to step up. The blue line, led by Adam Fox, remains elite at moving the puck, but they have surrendered 11 goals in their last three outings. To win in Miami, New York must tighten their gap control and prevent Florida’s heavy hitters from camping out in the crease.

In net, Igor Shesterkin is the projected starter. Shesterkin has 16 wins this season with a 2.51 GAA and a .910 save percentage. He has a history of rising to the occasion in "event" games and will need to be at his best to outduel his countryman in the opposite crease. Backup Jonathan Quick remains a reliable secondary option with a 2.11 GAA, but the Winter Classic stage belongs to Shesterkin.

Panthers' new-look attack ready for the spotlight

Florida enters their first-ever Winter Classic as a team that has successfully integrated high-end veteran talent into their championship core. Since acquiring Brad Marchand at the 2025 trade deadline, the Panthers have added a layer of "rat-like" tenacity that has made them even harder to play against. Sitting at 21-15-3, the Panthers are once again a top contender in the Atlantic Division.

Brad Marchand has silenced any skeptics since his move from Boston, leading the Panthers with 45 points (23G, 22A). His 23 goals lead the team, and he was recently honored with a pregame ceremony for reaching the 1,000-point milestone. Marchand’s chemistry with Sam Reinhart, who has 43 points (22G, 21A), gives Florida one of the most productive duos in the NHL. Both players were just named to Team Canada for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics.

The Panthers' blue line remains one of the league's most physical, anchored by Aaron Ekblad and Gustav Forsling. While they will be without Matthew Tkachuk tonight (on IR-NR), the depth provided by offseason addition Seth Jones has kept their transition game elite. The Panthers' penalty kill is a major strength at 82.8%, a stat that will be vital against the Rangers' top-heavy power play.

Sergei Bobrovsky will get the start in goal. "Bob" has 17 wins this season and a 2.80 GAA. While his save percentage (.888) is slightly lower than his career average, he has remained a "big-game hunter," winning key matchups against divisional rivals throughout December. In an outdoor setting where ice conditions can be unpredictable, Bobrovsky’s veteran poise is a significant advantage for Florida.

Moneyline pick for Rangers vs. Panthers

Florida Panthers ML (-142)

The Panthers are built for the grind of an outdoor game. Their heavy forecheck and the veteran leadership of Marchand and Reinhart should thrive in the atmosphere of loanDepot park. New York is currently reeling from a poor defensive stretch, and playing a "home" game for Florida in Miami will provide an emotional boost that the Rangers may find hard to match. With Bobrovsky’s experience and the Panthers' superior 5-on-5 depth, Florida is the clear choice to take the inaugural Miami Winter Classic.

Total pick for Rangers vs. Panthers

Under 5.5 (-105)

Outdoor games historically trend toward the under. Between the unique sightlines for shooters and the potential for the ice to soften in the Miami humidity (even with the retractable roof), goals are often hard to come by. Both Shesterkin and Bobrovsky are elite goaltenders who prioritize positioning, and both coaches will likely preach a "defense-first" mentality to avoid early mistakes on the big stage. Expect a tight, low-scoring 3-1 or 3-2 battle.
