New York Trying to Get Back in Win Column

New York fell to 0-2-1 in their last three games as they were beaten in overtime by Toronto on the road Thursday night in their previous contest. The Rangers fell to 2-3-1 on the year and stood fifth in the Metropolitan Division, three points behind the Hurricanes for the top spot entering Friday night. New York is 31st in the league with an average of 1.83 goals per game. The Rangers are 1st in goals against by allowing 1.50 goals per game this season. The Rangers are 6th in the league by successfully navigating 91.7% of their shorthanded situations on the season.

Against Toronto, the Rangers were stingy again in their own end, but their offense couldnโ€™t do enough to pull out the victory. New York owned a 10-9 advantage in shots in the opening period of play, but skated off trailing 1-0 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play. The second period saw the Rangers outshot by a 10-9 margin with neither side scoring, leaving them down 1-0 at the second intermission. In the third period, New York owned a 10-4 shot advantage and outscored Toronto 1-0 to knot the game at one at the end of regulation. Juuso Parssinen tied the game with his first goal of the year at 4:51 off an assist from Braden Schneider. In overtime, the Rangers were outshot 1-0 and outscored 1-0 to wind up with the loss. Igor Shesterkin made 22 saves for New York, who held a 29-24 edge in shots, in the loss. Jonathan Quick (0-1-0, 1.03 GAA, .952 save percentage) is expected to get the start in goal here.

Canadiens Seeking Fifth Straight Win

Montreal opened the year with a loss to Toronto, but has won four straight games as they took down Nashville in overtime at home Thursday night. The Canadiens improved to 4-1-0 and stand atop the Atlantic Division standings, two points ahead of Florida, Toronto, Detroit, and Boston for the top spot. Montreal stands tied for 6th in the league in offensive production with 3.60 goals per game on the season. The Canadiens are tied for 10th in goals against as they allow an average of 2.80 goals per contest. Montreal is tied for 23rd in the league in power play success by cashing in 15% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Canadiens are tied for 21st in penalty killing by successfully getting through 75% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against Nashville, 60 minutes wasnโ€™t enough to determine a winner, but the Canadiens managed to prevail in overtime Thursday night. Montreal saw the shots even at six in the opening period and skated off with the game scoreless after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, the Canadiens owned a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal but gave up the lone goal of the period to trail 1-0 at the second intermission. The third period saw Montreal with an 11-4 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge on the scoreboard to knot the game at two at the end of regulation. Oliver Kapanen tied the game with his third goal of the season at 6:02 off assists from Lane Hutson and Kaiden Guhle. After giving up the go-ahead goal, Cole Caufield scored the equalizer at 19:40 with his fourth goal of the year off an assist from Hutson. In overtime, both teams finished with three shots on goal but Montreal scored the winning goal to earn the victory. Caufield scored his second goal of the game and fifth of the year at 4:57 off assists from Nick Suzuki and Mike Matheson to win it. Jakub Dobes made 17 saves for Montreal, who held a 30-19 advantage in shots, in the win. Sam Montembeault (2-1-0, 2.97 GAA, .870 save percentage) is expected to get the start in goal here.

The Canadiens have a clean injury report for this contest.

Rangers vs. Canadiens Pick

Rangers vs. Canadiens Moneyline Pick

  • Rangers +102

Montreal has won four straight games, but they were fortunate to slip past Nashville by tying the game in the final minute of regulation before prevailing in the final seconds of overtime. The Canadiens now have to contend with a Rangersโ€™ squad that is 2-0-1 on the road this season. New York has outscored the opposition 11-3 in their three road games this year, and they have been extremely stingy defensively so far this season. Montreal will be tested to find high-danger scoring opportunities against a Rangers squad that has allowed just 86 combined shots in their last four games. Look for New York to skate away with the victory here.

Rangers vs. Canadiens Over/Under Pick

  • Under 6 (-110)

New York has stayed under the total in five of their six games of the season. The Rangers have an average total of 3.33 goals per game this season. Last year, New York had an average total of 6.22 goals per game, and that number climbed to 6.46 goals a night on the road. Montreal has seen the over post a 2-2-1 mark on this season. The Canadiens have an average total of 6.40 goals per game, with an average of seven goals in their two home games. Last season, Montreal saw an average total of 6.15 goals per game last season and that number slipped to 6.02 goals per game on home ice. While seven straight meetings have gone over the total, you have to think that this game is more defensively oriented, much like the Rangersโ€™ tilt with Toronto. Take the under here as a result.
