Rangers Seeking to Maintain Road Success

New York won for the third time in four games as they drubbed the Capitals on the road Tuesday night in their previous contest. The Rangers improved to 19-16-4 on the year and stood fifth in the Metropolitan Division, five points behind the Hurricanes for the top spot entering Friday night. New York is 28th in the league with an average of 2.62 goals per game. The Rangers are 7th in goals against by allowing 2.69 goals per game this season. New York is 18th when it comes to success with the man advantage as they have converted 18.9% of their power play opportunities this season. The Rangers are 16th in the league by successfully navigating 80.7% of their shorthanded situations on the season.

Against Washington, New York got their offensive attack clicking on all cylinders and that helped them drub the Capitals Tuesday night. The Rangers were outshot 6-5 in the opening period but skated off with a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of action. Taylor Raddysh opened the scoring with his sixth goal of the year at 14:57 off assists from Jonny Brodzinski and Braden Schneider. In the second period, New York was outshot 15-5 and outscored 3-1 to trail 3-2 at the second intermission. After giving up a pair of goals to trail 2-1, Will Cuylle tied the score with his 10th goal of the year, on the power play, at 11:14 off assists from Mika Zibanejad and Vincent Trocheck. The Rangers gave up the go-ahead goal later in the period to trail after 40 minutes. In the third period, New York saw the shots even at 11 but outscored Washington 5-0 to earn the win. Raddysh tied the game with his second of the night and seventh of the year at 8:10 off assists from Cuylle and Noah Laba. Alexis Lafreniere gave the Rangers a 4-3 edge with his eighth goal of the year at 9:18 with assists going to Artemi Panarin and Scott Morrow. Trocheck made it a 5-3 game with his seventh goal of the year at 13:43 with assists going to Brodzinski and Gabe Perreault. Panarin extended to a 6-3 lead with his 14th goal of the year, into an empty net, at 17:44 off assists from Zibanejad and Lafreniere. Trocheck closed the scoring with his eighth goal of the year at 18:09 with assists going to Cuylle and Raddysh. Igor Shesterkin made 29 saves for the Rangers, who were outshot 32-21, in the win. Shesterkin (16-11-3, 2.55 GAA, .908 save percentage, shutout) is expected to get the start here.

New York snapped a three-game slide as they edged the Devils at home Tuesday night to head into the Christmas break on a positive note. The Islanders entered Friday tied for third in the Metropolitan Division with a 20-13-4 record, three points behind the Hurricanes for the top spot in the division. New York is tied for 23rd in goals per game as they average 2.81 goals per contest. The Islanders are 8th in goals against per game as they allow 2.70 goals a night. New York is 26th in power play success as they convert 16.4% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Islanders are 11th in penalty killing as they successfully get through 81.6% of their shorthanded situations this year.

Against the Devils, the Islanders broke a tie in the third period and managed to skate away with the victory. New York was outshot 15-7 in the opening period and trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard at the first intermission. The Islanders owned a 14-6 advantage in shots in the second period and scored the lone goal of the period to tie the game at 1 after 40 minutes of action. Simon Holmstrom tallied the equalizer with his seventh goal of the year, unassisted, at 12:10 of the period. The third period saw the Islanders outshot 11-4 but they tallied the lone goal of the stanza to earn the win. Adam Pelech tallied the winner with his second goal of the year at 18:45 off assists from Anders Lee and Holmstrom. David Rittich made 31 saves for the Islanders, who were outshot 32-25, in the win. Ilya Sorokin (12-10-2, 2.55 GAA, .909 save percentage, two shutouts) gets the start in goal here.
