Ottawa hopes revitalized defense rounds out the roster
The Senators have struggled on offense lately, with only seven goals in their last four games but it’s been the backbone for them all season, averaging 3.14 goals per game. Tim Stutzle, Drake Batherson, and Dylan Cozens have 26 goals and 31 assists to lead the forwards, while defenseman Jake Sanderson is adding three goals and 12 assists from the point to open things up.
While the defense has struggled all season, allowing 3.23 goals per game, the unit has looked great in recent games, allowing only seven goals in the last four. Jake Sanderson and Artem Zub have anchored the top pair with 2.2 defensive point shares, while Jordan Spence and Nick Jensen have added depth to the unit. That said, the resurgence on defense is led by great play in the net with goaltender Linus Ullmark allowing only five goals in his last three starts, helping the Senators take two of those games.
Key injury report for Senators
- Thomas Chabot is day-to-day. He’s a key part of their defense
- Brade Tkachuk (thumb) is on injured reserve and hopes to join the team at some point in their seven-game road trip. Has three assists
Golden Knights hope defense bounces back
Vegas is coming off a 5-1 loss at Utah and went 1-2 in their most recent road trip and has won three of their last 10 games. The Golden Knights average 3.09 goals per game to rank 14th in the NHL. Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner have 14 goals and 37 assists to lead the way while Ivan Barbashev, Tomas Hertl, and Pavel Dorofeyev have combined for 28 goals and 25 assists to add depth to the forward group and allow it to overwhelm teams in the offensive end.
While defense has also been strong all season, allowing only 2.91 goals per game, the unit has looked concerning recently, allowing nine goals in the last two games. Shea Theodore and Brayden McNabb have combined for 3.0 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to easily open looks on the net. It hasn’t helped that Akira Schmid, who is having a respectable season with a .902 save percentage and a 2.45 goals against average on 317 shots with 1.5 goals saved above average, has played poorly lately, allowing 12 goals in his last five starts, including four in his latest game.

Senators vs Golden Knights Pick
Money Line Pick For Senators vs Golden Knights
- Senators (+145) (4 units)
The Golden Knights are eager to bounce back on their home ice but the Senators, who have won two of their last three, look to take over this game on the road against a Golden Knights team that’s lost two games in a row. The Senators should create plenty of scoring chances against Akira Schmid, who allowed four goals in his last start, with Tim Stutzle, Drake Batherson, and the rest of the forward unit carrying the puck into the offensive zone while creating open shots with quick passes. The Senators, who have allowed only seven goals in their last four games, should limit the Golden Knights offense with Jake Sanderson, Artem Zub, and the rest of the defensive unit creating turnovers in the defensive zone while limiting shots on the net while goaltender Linus Ullmark, who has allowed only five goals in their last three games, blanks the shots on the net. The Senators should win the game and provide great odds in the process as road Underdogs.
Take the Senators money line as road Underdogs.
Over/Under Pick For Senators vs Golden Knights
- Over 5.5 (5 Units)
The Senators offensive struggles make it easy to think this game will be a low-scoring one. However, both teams are led by their offenses, and this game is sure to be a high-scoring one. The Golden Knights average 3.09 goals per game, and they look to create plenty of scoring chances with Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner, and the rest of the forward unit carrying the puck into the offensive zone while creating open shots with quick passes. The Senators, who average 3.14 goals per game, should run up the score against a Golden Knights defense that’s allowed nine goals in their last two games with Tim Stutzle, Drake Batherson, Dylan Cozens, and the rest of the forward unit establishing a strong offensive zone presence and generating high-quality shots while Jake Sanderson fires shots on the net from the blue line. The Over should cover in a high-scoring game with both offenses stepping up.
Take the Over on 5.5 goals.
The Senators are still out west, wrapping up a seven-game road trip as they head to Vegas to face the Golden Knights.
