Last Saturday, the Pens failed to extend their winning streak to three games. They suffered a heavy 6-1 home defeat against the Rangers, who outshot the Penguins 30-19 on the night. New York converted two of its four power-play opportunities, whereas Pittsburgh went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
The 39-year-old center Evgeni Malkin has already amassed five assists, but he’s still looking for his first goal of the season. Winger Justin Brazeau has accounted for three goals thus far, while star center Sidney Crosby has a goal and an assist on his season tally.
Arturs Silovs recorded a shutout in the Penguins’ season opener, but the 24-year-old netminder couldn’t cope with the Rangers last Saturday. Tristan Jarry gave up three goals on 37 shots in that narrow win over the Islanders.
The Ducks barely outlasted the Sharks
The Anaheim Ducks took the ice twice in the opening week of the 2025-26 season. After a 3-1 defeat at the Seattle Kraken in their season opener, the Ducks edged out the San Jose Sharks 7-6 in overtime this past Saturday.
The Ducks outshot the Kraken 36-31, but it wasn’t enough, as Joey Daccord had a big day in the crease. Anaheim got things going against San Jose, though the Ducks’ defense struggled to contain the Sharks. Petr Mrazek yielded six goals on just 23 shots, but his teammates scored seven goals on a whopping 43 shots.
Last Saturday, Cutter Gauthier and Chris Kreider accounted for two goals each. Mason McTavish notched three assists, while Leo Carlsson scored a goal and posted two assists.
Lukas Dostal is expected to guard the cage against the Penguins. The 25-year-old netminder gave up three goals on 31 shots in a road loss against the Kraken. Last season, Dostal went 23-23-7 with a 3.10 GAA and a .903 save percentage.

The Ducks are not a great defensive team by any stretch of the imagination. But with Lukas Dostal in the net, they look more formidable than with Petr Mrazek guarding the cage. The Ducks’ offense should be very dangerous in 2025-26, and I expect it to make a difference when the Penguins come to town.

Tristan Jarry struggled a lot last season, going 16-12-6 with a 3.12 GAA and a .893 save percentage, while Arturs Silovs lacks experience. Silovs started nine games for the Vancouver Canucks in 2024-25 and posted a 2-6-1 record with an ugly 3.65 GAA and .861 save percentage.
The Ducks just scored seven goals on 43 shots against the Sharks, who might be the worst team in the NHL. I expect to see another high-scoring affair, even though Lukas Dostal is arguably a better goalie than Petr Mrazek.
