The Detroit Red Wings head to Rogers Place in Edmonton, AB, on Thursday night to face off against the Edmonton Oilers in a cross-conference showdown with the puck drop at 9:00 PM ET, and we’ve got you covered with our Red Wings vs. Oilers prediction.
Detroit and Edmonton wrap up their two-game regular-season set. Back in October, the Red Wings outlasted the Oilers 4-2 as +115 home underdogs with a total of six goals. Last season, they split a two-game set, with each team emerging victorious at home.
Let’s take a closer look at this Red Wings vs. Oilers prediction, one of our NHL picks for Thursday’s card. Edmonton opens as a -190 home fave with a total of 6.5 goals.
The Red Wings play without rest
Wednesday’s games have been excluded from this preview, and the Detroit Red Wings visited the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, searching for their third straight victory. In their previous two outings, the Red Wings have beaten the Seattle Kraken 4-3 and the Vancouver Canucks 4-0.

Last Thursday, the Red Wings started a six-game road trip with a 6-5 shootout loss at the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Cam Talbot gave up five goals on 32 shots. John Gibson has guarded the cage against Seattle and Vancouver, allowing three goals on 27 shots versus the Kraken and posting 39 saves against the Canucks for his first shutout of the season.
Gibson advanced to 7-7-1 on the season last Monday, carrying a troublesome 3.35 GAA and a .881 save percentage, while Talbot was 9-4-2 with a 3.01 GAA and a .884 save percentage. At the time of writing, it was unknown who would get the starting call on Thursday night. Gibson was expected to play against the Flames on Wednesday.
The Red Wings allow 3.33 goals per game (25th in the NHL) and score 3.10 goals in return (13th). Center Dylan Larkin (G16, A16) and winger Lucas Raymond (G10, A22) lead the way for Detroit with 32 points each, while winger Alex DeBrincat has amassed 14 goals and 17 assists this season.
The Oilers are coming off a disappointing loss
The Edmonton Oilers will close down their five-game road trip on Thursday night. After a 1-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild and a couple of wins over the Seattle Kraken, 9-4, and the Winnipeg Jets, 6-2, the Oilers suffered a 4-3 overtime defeat against the Buffalo Sabres this past Tuesday.
The Oilers erased a three-goal deficit against the Sabres, and Connor McDavid forced overtime with his second goal of the game with two seconds remaining in the third period. But it was another lousy defensive performance from the reigning Stanley Cup vice-champions, and Stuart Skinner yielded four goals on 28 shots.
Skinner is now 10-8-4 with a 2.91 GAA and a .887 save percentage in 2025-26, while Calvin Pickard carries a 3-3-2 record with an ugly 4.04 GAA and a .851 save percentage. The Oilers are 28th in the league in goals against (3.47 per game) and seventh in goals for (3.30).
McDavid leads the charge for Edmonton with 16 goals and 28 assists, while fellow center Leon Draisaitl has accounted for 17 goals and 21 assists this season. The Oilers cannot count on center Jack Roslovic (G10, A8), who’ll miss a few weeks due to an undisclosed injury.
Red Wings vs. Oilers Pick
Spread Pick for Red Wings vs. Oilers
- Edmonton Oilers -1.5 (5 units)
The Oilers desperately need more from their defense, and we can say the same about the Red Wings, who have allowed 31 goals over their previous eight outings, excluding Wednesday’s clash against Calgary.
Both teams can score. The Oilers are third in the NHL in power-play percentage (31.6%), while the Red Wings rank seventh in this category (24.0%). When it comes to penalty killing, Edmonton is 21st (79.8%), and Detroit is 22nd (79.0%).
I expect the Oilers to bounce back from that shocking loss against the Sabres, who were on the second night of a back-to-back. The Red Wings will have to deal with fatigue, too, but their recent defensive run of form doesn’t breed confidence.
Over/Under Pick for Red Wings vs. Oilers
- Over 6.5 (5 units)
John Gibson has been awful for most of the season, while Cam Talbot has allowed 16 goals over his previous four starts (0-2-2 record). Whoever gets the starting call on Thursday will have a tall task to slow the Oilers down.
Edmonton has scored 18 goals over its last three games. The Oilers are struggling to defend, but their offense is arguably one of the best in the league. I expect to see a proper high-scoring affair when the Red Wings come to town, so give me the over at plus money.
