Sharks Looking to Maintain Recent Momentum

San Jose ran their win streak to four as they won for the sixth time in seven games by rallying to beat Minnesota in overtime Tuesday night on the road. The Sharks are 24th in penalty killing as they have successfully navigated 75.4% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Minnesota, it was a low-scoring affair as the Sharks tied the game in the third period before prevailing in overtime. San Jose was outshot 8-5 in the opening period but skated off with the game scoreless after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, the Sharks were outshot 15-5 and outscored 1-0 to trail by that margin at the second intermission. The third period saw San Jose with a 7-6 edge in shots as they tallied the lone goal of the stanza to tie things up at one at the end of regulation. Will Smith tied the game with his seventh goal of the year, on the power play, at 11:57 off assists from Macklin Celebrini and Tyler Toffoli. In overtime, San Jose had the lone shot on goal and it found the back of the net for the victory. Collin Graf tallied his second goal of the year at 2:41 off assists from Celebrini and Sam Dickinson to win it for San Jose. Yaroslav Askarov made 28 saves for the Sharks, who were outshot 29-18, in the win. Askarov (5-4-1, 3.19 GAA, .898 save percentage) is expected to be between the pipes again here.

In their game against St. Louis, Calgary scored for the first time in three games but still ended up on the short end of the scoreboard. The Flames were outshot 14-10 in the opening period and trailed 2-0 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of action. Calgary owned a 14-10 advantage in shots in the second period and outscored St. Louis 2-1 to trail 3-2 at the second intermission. After giving up the first goal of the period to trail 3-0, Matt Coronato got the Flames on the board with his fourth goal of the year at 14:04 with Brayden Pachal drawing the lone assist on the goal. Just 25 seconds later, Rasmus Andersson made it a one-goal game with his third goal of the year at 14:29 with Mikael Backlund drawing the lone assist. In the third period, Calgary owned a 16-7 advantage in shots but neither side scored, leaving them with the loss. Dustin Wolf made 28 saves for the Flames, who owned a 40-31 advantage in shots, in the loss. Wolf (4-10-1, 3.24 GAA, .893 save percentage) is expected between the pipes for the Flames here.

Sharks vs. Flames Pick

Sharks vs. Flames Moneyline Pick

  • Sharks +140 (4 units)

How a team like the Flames is favored over anyone at this point is a mystery, especially given their inability to put the puck in the net. Calgary is just 2-4-1 at home on the year entering this game while the Sharks are 4-3 on the road. San Jose has won four straight, allowing just a single goal in each of those contests. The Sharks havenโ€™t allowed more than three goals in any of their last seven games and they have really tightened up in their own end of the ice. Given the way that the Sharks are playing right now, coupled with the Flamesโ€™ offensive ineptitude, give the advantage to San Jose here.

Sharks vs. Flames Over/Under Pick

  • Under 6 (-105) (5 units)

San Jose has gone over the number in nine of their 17 games this season. The Sharks have seen an average total of 6.53 goals per game to this point of the season, and that climbs to 7.43 goals per game in their seven road tilts. Calgary, despite their offensive woes, has seen the over post an 8-7-3 mark in their 18 games on the year. The Flames have an average total of 5.22 goals per game and that number drops to 4.86 goals per game in their seven home tilts. Of course, the Flames average just 2.29 goals per game on home ice this season. Calgary doesnโ€™t score while San Jose has been good defensively of late. Take the under here in this contest.
