Sharks hope their defense keeps playing well
San Jose has won three of their last four games, including one in a shootout and one in overtime. In their last game, they edged Boston 3-1 on Nov. 23. The Sharks are having a rocky season and hope their offense improves, scoring only 2.91 goals per game. Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith have scored 21 goals and 34 assists but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only three skaters have six goals or more, and opponents can limit the top-heavy offense as a result.
The offense has struggled, but the defense which allows 3.09 goals per game, has turned a corner lately, allowing only nine goals in their last four games. Dmitry Orlov and Mario Ferraro have combined for 2.4 defensive point shares while Vincent Desharias and Timothy Liljegren have combined for 1.7 defensive point shares to add depth to the unit. Moreover, goaltender Yaroslav Askarov has been incredible with a .910 save percentage and a 2.83 goals-against average on 446 shots with 5.7 goals saved above average.
Key injury report for Sharks
- No key injuries to report.
Colorado has been great across the board
Colorado was almost undefeated in November with the lone loss on November 1 at San Jose in overtime. They've allowed no goals in their last two games with shutout wins over Nashville and Chicago on the road on Nov. 22-23. The Avalanche look like the best team in the NHL with their offense leading the way, scoring 4.00 goals per game with 41 goals in the last nine games. Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Necas have scored 30 goals and 35 assists to lead the top line, but the rest of the offense has stepped up as well. Artturi Lehkonen, Victor Olofsson, and Brock Nelson have combined for 20 goals and 26 assists, while defenseman Cale Makar has added nine goals and 20 assists from the point to open up the offense.
The offense has stepped up but the defense has also been incredible, allowing only 2.18 goals per game with only 15 goals in the last nine games. Cale Makar and Devon Toews have combined for 4.4 defensive point shares, while Sam Malinski and Josh Manson have combined for 2.9 defensive point shares to add depth to the unit. In addition, goaltender Scott Wedgewood has been incredible with a .918 save percentage and a 2.09 goals-against average on 415 shots with 8.5 goals saved above average.
Key injury report for Avalanche
- Valeri Nichushkin (lower body) is week-to-week. Has five goals and seven assists.
Sharks vs Avalanche Pick
Money Line Pick For Sharks vs Avalanche
- Avalanche -1.5 (-140) (4 units)
The Avalanche, who average 4.00 goals per game, should pile on the goals with Nathan MacKinnon, Martin Necas, and the rest of the forward unit establishing a strong offensive zone presence while creating open shots with quick passes. The Avalanche, who allow only 2.18 goals per game, should limit the Sharks' offense with Cale Makar, Devon Toews, and the rest of the defensive unit creating turnovers in the defensive zone while limiting shots on the net, allowing goaltender Scott Wedgewood to make plenty of big saves. The Avalanche should win the game and cover the spread in a dominant win on their home ice.
Over/Under Pick For Sharks vs Avalanche
- Under 6.5 (5 Units)
Both teams have played great defense lately, and this game looks to be a low-scoring one from the opening puck drop. The Sharks, who have allowed only nine goals in their last four games, should limit the Avalanche offense with Mario Ferraro, Dmitry Orlov, and the rest of the defensive unit creating turnovers in the defensive zone while limiting shots on the net, allowing goaltender Yaroslav Askarov to make plenty of big saves. The Avalanche, who have allowed only 15 goals in their last nine games, should eliminate and potentially shut out the Sharks, who average only 2.91 goals per game, with Cale Makar, Devon Toews, Sam Malinski, and the rest of the defensive unit forcing turnovers in the neutral zone and defensive zone while goaltender Scott Wedgewood blanks the shots on the net. The Under should cover in a low-scoring game with both defenses stepping up.
Take the Under on 6.5 goals.
