San Jose Sharks vs Colorado Avalanche prediction

The San Jose Sharks face the Colorado Avalanche with both teams looking to improve on rough stretches. The Sharks are 27-23-4 and with two losses in a row, they are on the outside of the Western Conference playoff picture looking in. The Avalanche are 36-9-9 and have the best record in the NHL but they’ve only won three of their last 10 games. Who will win this game? Check out our Sharks vs Avalanche prediction!

Sharks are led by a great offense

The Sharks are in the playoff hunt thanks to their offense scoring 3.09 goals per game. Macklin Celebrini has 28 goals and 53 assists while Will Smith, Alexander Wennberg, and Tyler Toffoli have combined for 42 goals and 69 assists to add depth to the forward unit and make the Sharks offense tough to stop.

The offense has been great but the defense has struggled, allowing 3.48 goals per game, including 13 goals in the last three games. Mario Ferraro and Dmitry Orlov have combined for 4.2 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. The bright spot has been the play of goaltender Alexander Nedeljkovic, who has stepped up lately, allowing only five goals in his last three starts.

Key injury report for Sharks

  • No key injuries to report.

Colorado has been great across the board

The Avalanche are having a great season with their offense leading the way, scoring 3.83 goals per game. Nathan MacKinnon, Brock Nelson, and Artturi Lehkonen have scored 85 goals and 94 assists while defenseman Cale Makar has added 15 goals and 41 assists from the point to put the offense over the top.

The offense has carried the Avalanche but the defense has stepped up as well, allowing only 2.43 goals per game. Josh Manson and Cale Makar have combined for 7.7 defensive point shares while Sam Malinski and Brent Burns have combined for 6.9 defensive point shares to add depth to the unit. In addition, goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood has stepped up in the net, allowing only five goals in the last four games.

Sharks vs Avalanche Pick

Money Line Pick For Sharks vs Avalanche

  • Avalanche -1.5 (-110) (4 units)

The Sharks are a pleasant surprise but I see the Avalanche, who have been great all season, taking over this game on their home ice. The Avalanche should pile on the goals against the Sharks, who allow 3.48 goals per game, with Nathan MacKinnon, Brock Nelson, and the rest of the forward unit controlling the puck in the offensive zone while creating open shots with quick passes. The Avalanche, who allow only 2.43 goals per game, should limit the Sharks offense with Cale Makar, Josh Manson, and the rest of the defensive unit creating turnovers in the defensive zone while limiting shots on the net, allowing goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to make plenty of big saves. The Avalanche should win the game and cover the spread in a dominant win on their home ice.

Over/Under Pick For Sharks vs Avalanche

  • Over 6.5 (5 Units)

Both teams have great offenses and I see this game being a high-scoring one from the opening puck drop. The Sharks, who average 3.09 goals per game, should pile on the goals with Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, and the rest of the forward unit carrying the puck into the offensive zone while creating open shots with quick passes. The Avalanche, who average 3.83 goals per game, should run up the score against the Sharks, who have allowed 13 goals in the last three games, with Nathan MacKinnon, Brock Nelson, Artturi Lehkonen, and the rest of the forward unit establishing a strong offensive zone presence and creating open shots with effective puck movement while Cale Makar picks apart the Sharks defense from the point. The Over should cover in a high-scoring game with both offenses stepping up.

Take the Over on 6.5 goals.
