Seattle Kraken vs Detroit Red Wings Picks, Prediction, Odds, and Line Movement for Friday October 9 2026

Seattle arrives in Detroit for the first stop of a five-game road trip after splitting its first four games. The Kraken have scored freely at times, but their last outing was a 6-2 loss to Vegas. Detroit has a less attractive 1-2 record, yet its most recent game brought a 5-3 victory over Ottawa. Friday offers the Red Wings an opportunity to establish momentum at Little Caesars Arena rather than chase another comeback from an early deficit.
The price is a modest but meaningful part of the handicap. Detroit was around -141 at the midday snapshot, with Seattle +127. More recent listings show the Red Wings around -145 and the Kraken near +120. That is not a dramatic move, but it leaves Detroit close to the upper edge of a playable favorite range. The market is asking whether Detroit’s home advantage and healthier defensive structure can overcome Seattle’s more productive start.

Seattle Kraken Analysis

Jared McCann leads Seattle with five points, and four Kraken players have already scored twice. Those numbers show that the offense is not entirely dependent on a single finisher. Seattle can build pressure through several combinations and can threaten on the power play, which has converted at a useful early rate. The challenge is translating that scoring into a controlled road game, especially when the opponent can force Seattle to defend for extended shifts.
The larger problem is on defense. Ryan Lindgren was placed on injured reserve after suffering an upper-body injury in the Vegas loss, with an estimated absence of four to six weeks. His physical play and defensive-zone work are difficult to replace at short notice. Seattle must adjust its pairings at the start of a long trip, precisely when clean exits and reliable coverage are essential. Joey Daccord was listed as the projected starter, not a confirmed one, so the goaltending comparison should remain conditional until the final lineup is announced.

Detroit Red Wings Analysis

Detroit scored only twice across its first two games before finding five goals against Ottawa. That rebound is encouraging, although one strong offensive performance is not enough to declare the early problems solved. The Red Wings need more consistent puck support through the neutral zone and more second-chance opportunities around the crease. They are better equipped to attack Seattle’s altered defense if they avoid forcing plays through the middle.
John Gibson has been confirmed as Detroit’s starter. He stopped 22 of 25 shots in the Ottawa win and carries a .903 save percentage through three appearances. Those figures are respectable rather than dominant, but confirmation matters in a game where Seattle’s goaltender had not yet been formally announced. Detroit also has its own personnel issues, with J.T. Compher, Mason Appleton and Marco Kasper appearing on injury reports. That limits the margin for error and makes disciplined defensive play more important than a wide-open exchange.

Matchup and Line Movement

The most important tactical battle is Detroit’s ability to sustain possession against a Seattle defense missing Lindgren. If the Red Wings can repeatedly get pucks behind Seattle’s defenders, their forwards should create the sort of extended offensive-zone shifts that were harder to find during the opening two losses. Seattle will look to counter with speed and its multiple scoring threats, particularly when Detroit’s defensemen pinch to keep the play alive.
This is not an obvious mismatch. Seattle has scored more per game and can punish Detroit if the Red Wings take unnecessary penalties. But the timing favors the home side: Seattle is beginning a lengthy trip after a lopsided defeat and must immediately absorb an important injury. Detroit is coming off its first win and knows who will be in goal. A one-goal game is the most reasonable expectation, which makes the standard moneyline preferable to laying a puck line.

Best Bet

Detroit’s price remains defensible through -145, although a further move would weaken the case. Gibson’s confirmed start, the home setting and Seattle’s defensive adjustment are enough to support the Red Wings in a close game. The pick depends on Detroit maintaining better structure than it showed in its first two outings, not on assuming its five-goal performance against Ottawa is the new normal.
If Seattle’s offense wins the special-teams battle or Detroit again struggles to create sustained pressure, the underdog has a clear route to an upset. That risk is why the recommendation stops at a defined price rather than treating Detroit as a heavy favorite.
Best Bet: Detroit Red Wings moneyline at -145 or better
Prediction: Detroit Red Wings 3, Seattle Kraken 2
