Tampa Bay is led by incredible defense
The Lightning are having a great season with their offense stepping up and scoring 3.22 goals per game including six in their recent game. Jake Guentzel and Nikita Kucherov have scored 23 goals and 28 assists while Brandon Hagel, Anthony Cirelli, and Oliver Bjorkstrand have combined for 23 goals and 26 assists to add depth to the forward unit and make the Lightning a tough group to stop.
The offense has been great but the defense is what has them at the top of the Eastern Conference, allowing only 2.65 goals per game including nine goals in the last six games. JJ Moser and Emil Martinsen Lilleberg have combined for 3.3 defensive point shares while the defense has gotten a boost for the forwards as well with Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel adding 1.8 defensive point shares to strengthen things defensively. With the Lightning playing the second game of a back-to-back, the hope is that Jonas Johansson steps up as he’s struggled lately, allowing 13 goals in the last four starts.
Key injury report for Lightning
- Brayden Point is day-to-day. Has three goals and eight assists.
- Victor Hedman (undisclosed) was placed on long-term injured reserve. Has 12 assists and is a key part of the defense.
- Ryan McDonagh was placed on injured reserve. Is a key part of the defense.
- Erik Cernak was placed on injured reserve. Is a key part of the defense.
Rangers hapless offense is letting them down
The Rangers are having a rough season with their offense letting them down, scoring only 2.56 goals per game with only 21 goals in the last seven games. Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad have 14 goals and 24 assists but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only four skaters have six goals or more, and opponents can eliminate the hapless offense as a result.
The offense has struggled, but the defense has kept them competitive, allowing only 2.60 goals per game, including only six goals in the last three games. Adam Fox and Vladislav Gavrikov have combined for 3.7 defensive point shares, while Carson Soucy and Braden Schneider have combined for 2.3 defensive point shares to add depth to the unit. With the Rangers playing the second of a back-to-back, the hope is that Dylan Garand steps up in the net, as he was called up from the American Hockey League (AHL) this week and has yet to play at the NHL level.
Key injury report for Rangers
- Jonathan Quick was placed on injured reserve. He’s the backup goaltender, and it’s why the Rangers called up Dylan Garand this week.
- Will Borgen (upper body) is day-to-day. Is a key part of the defense.
Lightning vs Rangers Pick
Money Line Pick For Lightning vs Rangers
- Lightning (-110) (4 units)
The Rangers are looking to step up on their home ice, but the Lightning look like the best team in the Eastern Conferenc,e and they look to take over this game from the first period. The Lightning, who average 3.22 goals per game, should pile on the goals with Nikita Kucherov, Jake Guentzel, and the rest of the forward unit establishing a strong offensive zone presence and creating open shots with effective puck movement to overwhelm Dylan Garand, who is making his debut in the net. The Lightning, who allow only 2.65 goals per game, should limit the Rangers' offense with JJ Moser, Emil Martinsen, and the rest of the defensive unit creating turnovers while limiting shots on the net as backup goaltender Jonas Johansson steps up and blanks the shots on the net. The Lightning should win the game with a strong performance on the road.
Take the Lightning money line as road Favorites.
Over/Under Pick For Lightning vs Rangers
- Under 6 (5 Units)
With two backup goaltenders in the net and both teams coming off strong offensive performances, it’s easy to see this game being a high-scoring one. However, with both teams playing great defense lately, expect this game to be a low-scoring one from the first period. The Rangers, who have allowed only four goals in their last two games, should limit the Lightning offense with Adam Fox and Vladislav Gavrikov creating turnovers in the defensive zone while limiting shots on the net, allowing goaltender Dylan Garand to make plenty of big saves. The Lightning, who have allowed only nine goals in their last six games, should eliminate the Rangers offense, which has only 21 goals in the last seven games, with JJ Moser, Emil Martinsen Lilleberg, and the rest of the defensive unit plus Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel forcing turnovers in all three zones while Jonas Johansson steps up and blanks the shots on the net. The Under should cover in a low-scoring game with both defenses stepping up.
Take the Under on 6 goals.
The Lightning face the Rangers as part of a Thanksgiving weekend back-to-back with both teams looking to improve in the Eastern Conference.
