The Tampa Bay Lightning travel to Toronto to face the Maple Leafs on Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena. Puck drop for this Atlantic Division matchup is scheduled for 7:00 PM with television coverage on NHL Net. Tampa Bay enters the contest as one of the stronger teams in the conference while Toronto is trying to halt a losing skid and regain momentum in front of the home crowd. At the time of this writing the odds for the matchup including the moneyline, total, and puck line were not released. Tampa Bay Looks to Stop the Slide

The Tampa Bay Lightning come into this matchup with a 38-18-4 overall record and they have been strong away from home with a 19-8-4 road mark this season. Despite their excellent record, the Lightning have recently hit a rough patch over the last week. Tampa Bay has dropped four straight games, recently losing to Winnipeg, Minnesota, Buffalo, and Carolina during that stretch. Their only victory in the last five games came against this same Toronto Maple Leafs team when they secured a 4-2 win.

Even with the recent struggles, Tampa Bay remains one of the most productive offensive teams in the NHL this season. The Lightning are averaging 3.49 goals per game while allowing just 2.64 goals per contest. They are generating 28.4 shots per game while limiting opponents to only 26.7 shots. The special teams have been solid as well with 40 power play goals and a respectable 21.5 percent power play conversion rate.

The Lightning’s defensive discipline has been one of the key strengths of the team this season. Tampa Bay has allowed only 32 power play goals against while posting an 83.0 percent penalty kill rate. That penalty killing unit combined with a defense allowing under three goals per game has helped Tampa Bay remain competitive even when the offense goes through dry spells. If they can tighten up defensively again after the recent losing streak, Tampa Bay has the tools to bounce back quickly.

Toronto Searching for Answers

The Toronto Maple Leafs enter this game with a 27-25-11 record overall and they have been fairly steady at home with a 16-10-7 record at Scotiabank Arena. Unfortunately for Toronto, the team has been struggling mightily in recent games. The Maple Leafs have lost five straight contests, recently falling to the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia Flyers, Ottawa Senators, and Florida Panthers.

Offensively, Toronto has still been fairly productive this season. The Maple Leafs are averaging 3.18 goals per game while putting 27.5 shots on net each contest. However, the biggest issue for Toronto has been their defensive play. The Leafs are allowing 3.42 goals per game while giving up a concerning 32.1 shots per contest. That defensive vulnerability has made it difficult for the team to close out games even when the offense is producing.

Special teams have been somewhat respectable for Toronto as well. The Maple Leafs have scored 29 power play goals with a 19.9 percent success rate and their penalty kill is operating at 83.4 percent. Still, the overall defensive numbers remain the main concern. If Toronto hopes to snap their losing streak in this matchup, they will need a stronger defensive effort and improved puck possession to limit Tampa Bay’s scoring opportunities.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs Toronto Maple Leafs Pick

Lightning vs Maple Leafs Pick

  • Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning Moneyline

Toronto enters this matchup in the middle of a brutal five-game losing streak and the defensive issues are becoming a serious concern. The Maple Leafs have allowed at least four goals in three of their last five games while also struggling to control the pace of play. Tampa Bay, despite their recent skid, has been far more consistent over the course of the season and already defeated Toronto recently. The Lightning also have the stronger defensive metrics and a far more reliable penalty kill unit. With Toronto continuing to struggle defensively and Tampa Bay eager to end their losing streak, the Lightning appear to have the edge in this matchup.

Lightning vs Maple Leafs Total Pick

  • Pick: Over

I expect this game to feature plenty of scoring opportunities for both teams. Toronto’s defense has been allowing over three goals per game while surrendering more than 32 shots per contest. Tampa Bay has one of the most efficient offenses in the league and should generate plenty of chances. At the same time, the Lightning have also been giving up goals recently during their losing streak. With both teams looking to bounce back offensively, I believe this matchup could turn into a high-scoring contest.

Final Score Prediction: Tampa Bay Lightning 4, Toronto Maple Leafs 3

This prediction was written before the completion of game play on Friday.
