Toronto Trying to Snap Slide

Toronto dropped to 0-3-1 in their four games as they were downed in overtime at home by the Kings Thursday night. The Maple Leafs entered Friday 8-8-2 on the season and stand tied for sixth, four points behind Montreal, Boston and Ottawa for the top spot in the Atlantic Division. Toronto is fourth in the league in goals per game as they average 3.61 goals per contest. The Maple Leafs are 32nd in goals against as they have allowed 3.83 goals per contest. Toronto is tied for 24th in the league in power play success as they are converting on 17% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Maple Leafs are 19th in the league in the penalty killing department as they successfully get through 78.2% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Los Angeles, a banged-up Toronto squad let a third period lead slip away and they ended up falling in overtime. Toronto was outshot 9-4 in the opening period but skated off with a 2-0 advantage on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play. Bobby McMann opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the year, unassisted, at the 8:06 mark. John Tavares staked Toronto to a 2-0 lead with his 10th goal of the year at 16:39 off assists from Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Matthew Knies. In the second period, Toronto was outshot 11-4 and outscored 2-1, leaving them up 3-2 at the second intermission. After giving up a pair of goals to tie the score, Tavares scored his second goal of the night and 11th of the year at 17:16 off assists from William Nylander and Knies for a 3-2 Maple Leafs edge. In the third period, Toronto was outshot 16-7 and outscored 1-0 to send the game to overtime tied at three. During the extra session, the Maple Leafs were outshot 1-0 and that shot found the net, sending the hosts to defeat. Dennis Hildeby made 33 saves for Toronto, who was outshot 37-15, in the loss. Joseph Woll (27-14-1, 2.73 GAA, .909 save percentage, shutout in 42 games, 41 starts, last season) is expected to make his season debut here.

Marshall Rifai (wrist) is out indefinitely. Left wing Scott Laughton (upper body), defenseman Chris Tanev (upper body) and center Auston Matthews (lower body) are out until mid to late November. Goaltender Anthony Stolarz (upper body) is day-to-day.

Blackhawks Seeking to Earn Home Victory

Chicago saw their three-game winning streak snapped but they did pick up a point in their overtime defeat to New Jersey at home Wednesday night. The Blackhawks entered Friday night tied for third in the Central Division with an 8-5-4 record and stand nine points behind the Avalanche for the top spot. Chicago is tied for 11th on the season when it comes to scoring production, as they average 3.29 goals per game. The Blackhawks are tied for 4th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 2.59 goals per contest. Chicago is 5th in power play success as they convert 26% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Blackhawks are 8th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully kill off 84.1% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against New Jersey, 60 minutes wasn’t enough to determine a winner but the Blackhawks couldn’t earn the second point as they fell in overtime. Chicago owned a 12-10 shot advantage in the opening period and skated off with a 1-0 edge on the scoreboard after 20 minutes. Connor Bedard opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the year, on the power play, at 18:35 with assists going to Teuvo Teravainen and Tyler Bertuzzi. In the second period, Chicago was outshot 14-3 and outscored 1-0 to see the game tied at one at the second intermission. The third period saw the Blackhawks outshot 9-5 with both teams scoring twice, leaving the game even at three at the end of regulation. Landon Slaggert gave Chicago a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the year at 3:05 off assists from Louis Crevier and Nick Foligno. After New Jersey tied the game, Sam Lafferty gave the Blackhawks a 3-2 lead with his first goal of the year at 13:34 with assists going to Foligno and Crevier. They allowed the tying goal less than three minutes later. In overtime, Chicago was outshot 4-0 and gave up the winning goal to end up with the loss. Spencer Knight made 33 saves for the Blackhawks, who were outshot 37-20, in the loss. Knight (6-3-3, 2.46 GAA, .923 save percentage, shutout) is expected between the pipes for Chicago here.

Shea Weber (ankle) and Laurent Brossoit (hip) are both out here. Jason Dickinson (shoulder), Frank Nazar (abdomen) and Tyler Bertuzzi (undisclosed) are each day-to-day.

Maple Leafs vs. Blackhawks Pick

Maple Leafs vs. Blackhawks Moneyline Pick

  • Maple Leafs -125 (4 units)

Toronto has dropped four straight games but they should get a shot in the arm with the return of Woll between the pipes here. The Maple Leafs were tough last season with Stolarz and Woll working in tandem between the pipes last season. Now, clearly not having Matthews is far from ideal for the visitors but they do have some offensive firepower, led by Tavares, Nylander and Knies. Chicago has surpassed expectations to this point of the season but this is still a pretty young Blackhawks squad. Knight has been solid but he has had rough patches here and there as well. Sometimes, intangibles are what makes the difference and having Woll back might be enough to get Toronto back on track with a win here.

Over/Under Pick for Maple Leafs vs. Blackhawks

  • Over 6 (4 units)

Toronto has seen the over post a 16-2 mark in their 18 games on the year and has gone over the number a ridiculous 13 straight games. Toronto has had an average of 7.44 goals per game this season in the early going and that number rockets to 8.20 goals per game on the road this season. Chicago has stayed under the total in 10 of their 17 games, with one push in relation to the total with an average total of 5.88 goals per game. That number drops to 5.29 goals per game at home. The over has hit in seven of the last 10 meetings between the teams. Look for this one, by hook or by crook, to wind up over the mark as well.
