Panthers Hoping to Rebound From Recent Slump

Florida lost their second straight and third in the last four games as they were beaten at home by Calgary Friday night. The Panthers entered Monday 12-11-1 on the year and were tied for sixth in the Atlantic Division, nine points behind Tampa Bay for the top spot. Florida is tied for 13th in the league in goals per game as they put up an average of 3.08 goals a night this season. The Panthers are 19th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 3.17 goals per contest. Florida is 17th in power play success as they have cashed in on 19.3% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Panthers are 24th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 78.5% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Calgary, Florida struggled in their own end and that ended up costing them a victory. The Panthers owned a 20-14 advantage in shots in the opening period but skated off with the game tied at two at the first intermission. Evan Rodrigues opened the scoring with his seventh goal of the season, 54 seconds into the game, off assists from Sam Reinhart and Jesper Boqvist. Sam Bennett made it a 2-0 game with his sixth goal of the year at 2:58 off assists from A.J. Greer and Carter Verhaeghe. They gave up a pair of goals later in the period to skate off even. In the second period, Florida was outshot 10-8 and outscored 2-0 to trail 4-2 after 40 minutes of play. The third period saw the Panthers with a 13-10 advantage in shots with both teams scoring once, leaving them down as time expired. Brad Marchand got the Panthers within a goal as he tallied his 15th goal of the season at 11:54 off assists from Reinhart and Anton Lundell. That was as close as Florida would get as they gave up an empty net goal late to close the scoring. Daniil Tarasov made 29 saves for the Panthers, who owned a 41-34 advantage in shots on goal, in the loss. Sergei Bobrovsky (10-7-0, 2.88 GAA, .882 save percentage, two shutouts) is expected to be in net for the Panthers in this contest.

Maple Leafs vs. Panthers Pick

Maple Leafs vs. Panthers Moneyline Pick

  • Maple Leafs +140 (4 units)

Florida has struggled of late, losing four of their last six at home and three of their last four overall entering this game. The Maple Leafs have had their issues this season but they are getting healthier, which should potentially help them in the long run. Toronto had a big offensive showing against Pittsburgh Saturday night as they torched the Penguins and now get a crack against a Florida team missing some of their key contributors. The Panthers have been up and down this season, and while they can turn it on at any point, it’s tough backing them at such a high price. You can take the Maple Leafs on the puck line for a cushion, but don’t be surprised if Toronto wins straight up here.

Maple Leafs vs. Panthers Over/Under Pick

  • Under 6.5 (4 units)

Toronto has seen the over post a 18-6-1 mark in their 25 games on the year entering this contest and had a stretch of 13 straight overs earlier in the season. Toronto has had an average of 6.96 goals per game this season and that number bumps to 7.10 goals per game on the road this season. Florida has seen the over hit in 13 of their 24 games on the year. The Panthers have an average total of 6.25 goals per game on the year and that number slips to 5.80 goals per game in their 15 home tilts. With Toronto playing better defensively with the return of Woll, look for this game to wind up falling short of the number.
