The Mammoth hope to stay on the winning path
The Utah Mammoth opened the season with a 2-1 defeat at the Colorado Avalanche this past Thursday. Utah outshot Colorado 33-27, but the Mammoth’s five-on-five offense let the team down. Utah converted one of its three power-play opportunities, as Dylan Guenther scored his first goal in 2025-26.

Last Saturday, the Mammoth visited the Nashville Predators. Utah earned a 3-2 overtime victory, overcoming a 2-1 deficit. Logan Cooley and Jack McBain found the back of the net in regulation, while Guenther scored an unassisted winner in overtime.
The Mammoth went 0-for-4 with the man advantage in Nashville. At least, they killed all five of the Predators’ power-play opportunities.
Karel Vejmelka did a great job in the opening week. The 29-year-old netminder posted 25 saves against the Avalanche and 20 stops versus the Predators. Vejmelka enjoyed a solid 2024-25 campaign, going 26-22-8 with a 2.58 GAA and a .904 save percentage.
The Blackhawks search for their first win
The Chicago Blackhawks took the ice three times in the opening week. It was a disappointing start for the Blackhawks, who earned just a point. They sandwiched a 4-3 overtime defeat at the Boston Bruins with a couple of 3-2 losses against the Florida Panthers and the Montreal Canadiens.
Last Saturday, the Canadiens outshot the Blackhawks 28-22 at United Center. Montreal converted two of its 10 power-play opportunities, as Chicago had a whopping 39 penalty minutes. The Blackhawks went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
Frank Nazar accounted for two assists against the Canadiens. Sam Rinzel and Connor Bedard scored a goal each, and Bedard now has three points on the season (G2, A1).
Spencer Knight fell to 0-2-0 on the season following Saturday’s loss to Montreal. The 24-year-old gave up three goals on 28 shots against Montreal and three goals on 37 shots against Florida. Arvid Soderblom guarded the cage against Boston, yielding four goals on 33 shots.
Mammoth vs. Blackhawks Pick
Moneyline Pick for Mammoth vs. Blackhawks
- Chicago Blackhawks (5 units)
The Blackhawks are an angry group. They’ve lost three straight contests by one goal. Last Saturday, they were pretty unlucky, as the Canadiens scored the winner with 15 seconds remaining to play in the third period.
I expect the Blackhawks to bounce back and outlast the Mammoth. Spencer Knight is one of the most talented goaltenders in the league, and the Blackhawks’ discipline will improve after that shocking display against Montreal.
On paper, Utah is a better defensive team than Chicago, but the Mammoth’s offense has some flaws. Should the Blackhawks slow Utah down, Spencer Knight will make a difference.
Over/Under Pick for Mammoth vs. Blackhawks
- Under 6.0 (5 units)
The bookies are looking for a low-scoring affair, and I cannot argue about it. Both teams struggled to score in the opening week, and Utah heavily relied on its defense and Karel Vejmelka.
Utah’s five-on-five offense was awful in 2024-25. The Mammoth started the new season with a lousy offensive display against the Avalanche, and they certainly didn’t impress in a 3-2 overtime victory over the Predators, who were one of the worst teams in the league last season.
Chicago’s top two lines are solid, but the Blackhawks arguably lack depth. I can only look at the under in this matchup.
