The Canucks’ defense looks awful
The Vancouver Canucks visited the San Jose Sharks on Friday, looking for their second win on the spin. Last Wednesday, the Canucks put an end to their three-game losing streak. After consecutive defeats against the Florida Panthers 8-5, the Dallas Stars 4-2, and the Calgary Flames 5-2, the Canucks outlasted the Anaheim Ducks 5-4 on the road.
Anaheim outshot Vancouver 41-28, but Nikita Tolopilo had a strong season debut for the Canucks. Tolopilo was confirmed for Friday’s clash against San Jose, so the Canucks will probably have to start Jiri Patera on Saturday. Patera made one start in 2025-26, allowing seven goals on 40 shots in that 8-5 defeat against Florida.
Thatcher Demko joined the Canucks on their road trip, but the 29-year-old netminder is still waiting for a green light to return from his lower-body injury. Kevin Lankinen is out due to personal reasons, so the Canucks desperately need Demko back. Vancouver allows a staggering 3.75 goals per game (32nd in the NHL) and scores 3.08 goals in return (tied for 16th).
The Kings need more from their offense
The Los Angeles Kings visited the Anaheim Ducks on Friday, searching for their second victory in a row. The Kings stopped their three-game slide this past Monday. After losing against the Washington Nationals 2-1, the San Jose Sharks 4-3 in a shootout, and the Boston Bruins 2-1 in overtime, the Kings outlasted the Ottawa Senators 2-1.
Ottawa outshot Los Angeles 28-22, but Darcy Kuemper put on another strong performance. Kuemper advanced to 8-4-4 on the season while boasting a 2.30 GAA and a .910 save percentage. He was confirmed for Friday’s game against Anaheim, which means Anton Forsberg will patrol the crease on Saturday.
Forsberg is 3-2-2 with a 2.94 GAA and a .888 save percentage this season. In his previous start, Forsberg gave up three goals on 24 shots in that shootout defeat at the Sharks. The Kings surrender 2.61 goals per game (5th in the NHL) and score 2.65 goals in return (27th). Their shooting percentage of 9.1 is the third-worst in the league.
Canucks vs. Kings Pick
Moneyline Pick for Canucks vs. Kings
- Los Angeles Kings -1.5 (4 units)
This is a great opportunity for the Kings’ offense to get things going. As I said, the Canucks’ defense has been awful this season. No team has allowed more power-play goals than Vancouver, and the Canucks are dead last in the NHL in expected goals against at even strength.
Keep tracking the injury report, but I would take the Kings even if Thatcher Demko suits up. If Jiri Patera gets the nod, the Kings should outscore the Canucks with ease. Anton Forsberg is not Darcy Kuemper, but the Kings’ blueline has done a great job thus far. Los Angeles is sixth in the league in expected goals against at even strength.
Over/Under Pick for Canucks vs. Kings
- Over 6.5 (4 units)
Given the Canucks’ recent run of form, I have to take the over. Vancouver has allowed four or more goals in seven of its previous eight games overall. The Canucks can score, and they will find a way to add to the scoreboard in a tough matchup against the Kings’ defense. Vancouver has scored at least two goals in 13 straight outings at any location.
I expect the Kings to finally get things going on the offensive side of the puck. Their top two lines are loaded with talent. Kevin Fiala has scored nine goals across 23 games, while Adrian Kempe and Quinton Byfield have recorded 13 assists each.
