The Vancouver Canucks face the San Jose Sharks, with both teams looking to improve on rough seasons. The Canucks are 10-12-2 and with only two wins in their last eight games, they have the second-worst record in the Pacific Division. The Sharks have an 11-10-3 record and two losses in their last three games have them on the outside of the playoff pictur,e looking in. Who will win this matchup? Vancouver has been let down by an awful defense
The Canucks are having a terrible season despite their offense stepping up and scoring 3.08 goals per game. Elias Pettersson and Keifer Sherwood have scored 19 goals and 18 assists while defenseman Quinn Hughes has two goals and 20 assists from the point to open up the offense.
The offense is great but the defense is a mess and causing their season to fall apart, allowing 3.75 goals per game with 37 goals in the last eight games. Filip Hronek and Marcus Pettersson have combined for 2.7 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. In addition, the pile up of injuries has the Canucks turning to Jiri Patera, who allowed seven goals in his only start of the season.
Key injury report for Canucks
- Thatcher Demko (lower body) is on injured reserve. He’s the Canucks starting goaltender.
- Kevin Lankinen (personal) isn’t traveling with the team for their road trip. He’s the Canucks backup goaltender.
- Teddy Blueger (lower body) is on injured reserve has has yet to resume skating.
Sharks have played poorly on both ends lately
The Sharks have shown flashes but have struggled on the season, allowing 2.79 goals per game with only five goals in the last three games. Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith have 21 goals and 34 assists, but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only three skaters have six goals or more and opponents can limit the top-heavy offense as a result.
The offense has struggled, but the defense has also played poorly, allowing 3.21 goals per game with six goals in their recent loss. Dmitry Orlov and Mario Ferraro have combined for 2.4 defensive point shares, but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. The bright spot is the play of goaltender Yaroslav Askarov who has allowed only 11 goals in his last five starts to build off a season where he has a .905 save percentage and a 3.03 goals-against average on 465 shots with 3.8 goals saved above average.
Key injury report for Sharks
- No key injuries to report.
Canucks vs Sharks Pick
Money Line Pick For Canucks vs Sharks
- Sharks (+105) (4 units)
The Sharks have lost two of three, but I see them bouncing back against a Canucks team that’s lost six of their last eight games. The Sharks should create plenty of scoring chances against the Canucks, who allow 3.75 goals per game, with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith controlling the puck in the offensive zone while creating open shots with quick passes. The Sharks look to rebound after allowing six goals in their last game and limit the Canucks offense with Yaroslav Askarov, who has allowed only 11 goals in his last five starts, blanking shots on the net while getting a bump from Mario Ferraro and Dmitry Orlov, who keep creating turnovers in all three zones. The Sharks should win the game and provide great odds in the process as home Underdogs.
Take the Sharks money line as home Underdogs.
Over/Under Pick For Canucks vs Sharks
- Over 6.5 (5 Units)
Both teams have awful defenses and I see this game being a high-scoring one from the opening puck drop. The Canucks, who average 3.08 goals per game, should create plenty of scoring chances against a Sharks team that allowed six goals in their last game with Elias Pettersson, Keifer Sherwood, and the rest of the forward unit carrying the puck into the offensive zone while creating open shots with quick passes. The Sharks should run up the score against the Canucks, who have allowed 37 goals in their last eight games, with Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, and the rest of the forward unit overwhelming the Canucks with speed in all three zones and creating open shots with quick passes. The Over should cover in a high-scoring game with both offenses stepping up.
Take the Over on 6.5 goals.
The Canucks and Sharks go at it out west with both teams looking to climb out of the bottom of the Pacific Division.
