Winnipeg Puck Line at +110

Winnipeg Jets -1.5 at +110, neither of these teams is going to be confused for a contender. Winnipeg is 5-8-3 with 13 points and Vancouver is 3-13-1 with 7 points. So worst record in the NHL by a comfortable margin, this is a play on relative misery. The Jets are bad. The Canucks are historically bad. Vancouver allows 4.53 goals per game, — dead last in the league and it's not close. A $100 bet collects $110 on a two-goal Winnipeg win. Against a team leaking 4.53 per night, that is far from a stretch.

Vancouver Is the Worst Team in Hockey

Vancouver is 3-13-1. Seven points through 17 games. The Canucks actually score at a league-average rate, 3.00 per game, making the 4.53 goals against even more staggering. This team can put the puck in the net — They just can't keep it out. The penalty kill at 63.2% is the worst in the NHL, nearly 37% of opponent power plays are going in. Which that number is almost hard to believe, three — worth noting — years ago a 75% kill rate would've been considered poor. Vancouver is operating nearly twelve percentage points below that.
Winnipeg's season cratered after trading Hellebuyck to New Jersey on October 23, lost the franchise goaltender and the results reflect it. The Jets are 5-8-3 and scoring just 2.44 per game, near the bottom of the league. Stuart Skinner, picked up as part of the roster reshuffling, is 3-4-3 with a .887 save percentage and 3.36 GAA. Josh Morrissey has been out since October 7 with an upper-body injury, skating in a non-contact jersey as of November 2 but not in tonight's lineup. Without their best defenseman and without their franchise goaltender, the Jets are a shell of what they were last year.

Winnipeg's Post-Hellebuyck Struggles

Both penalty kills are terrible — Winnipeg at 68.7%, Vancouver at 63.2%. Every power play in this game has a realistic shot at converting. Winnipeg's 17.0% power play isn't great under normal circumstances. Against a 63.2% kill rate, though, even a mediocre power play becomes dangerous. Nearly four in ten Vancouver penalty kills result in a goal against. Vancouver's 21.8% power play is actually respectable, — the one reason the Canucks haven't been even worse. But the 63.2% kill gives back everything the power play creates and then some.

The Penalty Kill Disaster

At +110 the implied probability for Winnipeg -1.5 is roughly 47.6%. The question is simple: does Winnipeg win by two or more goals against a team allowing 4.53 per game more than 47.6% of the time? Vancouver has lost 13 of 17 games. Most of those losses have been multi-goal defeats given the massive negative differential. Plus money on the puck line against the worst team in the league shows up maybe three or four times per month. This is one of those spots. Take it and don't look back.

Plus Money Puck Line Math

Winnipeg scores first on an early power play against that 63.2% kill rate. Vancouver ties it because the Canucks can actually score, 3.00 per game proves there's offensive talent here. And the second period is where Winnipeg separates. Two goals, 3-1 lead heading into the third, vancouver's defense collapses the way it has all season. Winnipeg adds one more.

Winnipeg Wins Ugly

Final score, Winnipeg 4, Vancouver 2, canucks get a late goal that means nothing for the outcome. The puck line cashes comfortably. Vancouver's defensive issues are simply too severe to overcome, even against a Winnipeg team that's struggled all year.
Both teams are bad and bad-on-bad games go sideways sometimes. If Vancouver gets hot goaltending for one random night. And Winnipeg can't finish, this could be a 3-2 game that misses the puck line. But skinner's .887 also means the Jets could give up four and suddenly the spread is dead. None the less, a team allowing 4.53 per game — big number — loses by multiple goals far more often than not. And the odds back it.

Vancouver Upset Scenario

At the end of the day this comes — big number — down to one number: 4.53 goals allowed per game. And that's the worst in hockey by over half a goal per game. Everything else is noise.

Best Bet

Best Bet: Winnipeg -1.5 (+110) — The worst team in the NHL, allowing 4.53 per game with a 63.2% penalty kill, visiting a Jets team that only needs to be slightly less terrible. Plus money on a two-goal win. Prediction: Winnipeg 4, Vancouver 2
