Golden Knights Seeking to Stay Hot

Vegas won their fourth straight game as they took down Carolina at home in their previous contest Monday night. The Golden Knights entered Friday 5-0-2 and stood first in the Pacific Division standings, leaving them two points ahead of the Kraken for the top spot in the division. Vegas entered Friday’s action 1st in the league in goals for as they average 4.29 goals per contest on the season. The Golden Knights are tied for 11th in the league in goals against as they give up an average of 2.71 goals per game this season. Vegas is 2nd in power play success as they cash in on 32.1% of their opportunities with the man advantage. The Golden Knights are 22nd in the league in penalty killing as they have successfully navigated through 73.7% of their shorthanded situations on the season.

Against Carolina, Vegas jumped in front in the opening stanza and never let the Hurricanes even the rest of the way en route to the victory. The Golden Knights saw the shots even at eight in the opening period and skated off with a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Jack Eichel opened the scoring with his sixth goal of the year at 8:42 off assists from Brandon Saad and Ivan Barbashev. Pavel Dorofeyev made it a 2-0 game with his seventh goal of the season at 10:28 with assists going to Mitch Marner and Tomas Hertl. In the second period, the Golden Knights were outshot 9-7 and outscored 1-0 to see their lead trimmed to 2-1 at the second intermission. In the third period, Vegas held an 11-10 shot edge and outscored Carolina 2-0 to secure the win. Barbashev made it a 3-1 game with his third goal of the year, unassisted, at the 11:06 mark. William Karlsson closed the scoring with an empty net goal, his third of the year, at 18:23 off assists from Marner and Shea Theodore. Adin Hill stopped all four shots he faced before leaving at the 9:54 mark of the opening period. Akira Schmid stopped 22 of 23 shots in relief to earn the win for the Golden Knights, who were outshot 27-26, in the win. Schmid (4-0-0, 2.57 GAA, .899 save percentage) is expected to get the start in goal.

Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo (hip) is done for the season. Right wing Mark Stone (wrist), defenseman Noah Hanifin (undisclosed) and center Brett Howden (lower body) are out indefinitely. Goaltender Adin Hill (lower body) is questionable for this contest.

Florida Trying to Regroup at Home

Florida lost for the fifth time in six games as they were dropped by the Penguins at home Thursday night. The Panthers entered Friday 4-5-0 on the year and were third in the Atlantic Division, four points behind Montreal for the top spot. Florida is 29th in the league in goals per game as they put up an average of 2.44 goals a night this season. The Panthers are 18th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 3.11 goals per contest. Florida is 10th in power play success as they have cashed in on 24.3% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Panthers are tied for 15th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 77.4% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Pittsburgh, Florida’s recent struggles continued as they were downed on home ice. The Panthers were outshot 7-6 in the opening period and trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, Florida owned a 13-6 shot edge but was outscored 2-1 to trail 3-1 at the second intermission. After giving up a goal to trail 2-0, Brad Marchand got the Panthers on the board with a power play goal, his fourth of the year, at 8:26 with assists going to Mackie Samoskevich and Seth Jones. Florida gave up a goal later in the period to restore a two-goal deficit. In the third period, the Panthers owned an 18-4 shot advantage but both teams scored twice, leaving them on the short end of the scoreboard. Sam Reinhart got Florida within 3-2 with his third of the year, on the power play, off assists from Samoskevich and Jones at the 2:24 mark. The Panthers gave up a goal again to trail by two before Marchand scored his second of the night and fifth of the season at 11:06 off assists from Eetu Luostarinen and Anton Lundell. That was as close as the Panthers would get as they gave up a goal 43 seconds later to trail by a pair. Sergei Bobrovsky made 12 saves for Florida, who owned a 37-17 shot advantage, in the loss. Bobrovsky (4-3-0, 2.61 GAA, .893 save percentage) is slated to get the start in goal here.

Two of Florida’s top three point getters from a season ago won’t take the ice here. Aleksander Barkov (20 goals, 71 points) and Matthew Tkachuk (22 goals, 57 points in 52 games) are both injured long term. Barkov (knee) could miss the entire season while Tkachuk (groin) is expected to be out until December. Nosek (knee) is also out an extended period after injuring his knee in the offseason. Defenseman Dmitry Kulikov (upper body) was placed on IR Saturday and is out indefinitely.

Golden Knights vs. Panthers Moneyline Pick

  • Golden Knights +104

Vegas has four straight wins on the board heading into this contest. The Golden Knights also have a rest advantage, having had four days off heading into this contest, while Florida was in action Thursday night. The Golden Knights lead the league in goals per game and they have been solid, without a regulation loss on the season. Schmid has been good between the pipes and likely gets the call after Hill left the Carolina game early. Florida has dropped five of their last six and the Panthers are sputtering offensively without Barkov and Tkachuk in the mix. With the Panthers struggling to score, Vegas on the road to pick up the win is the play here.

Golden Knights vs. Panthers Over/Under Pick

  • Over 5.5 (-135) (5 units)

Vegas has seen the over post a 4-2-1 mark on the season. The Golden Knights have posted an average total of seven goals per game on the year. That number slips to an average of 5.33 goals per game on the road in three contests. Vegas has seen the opposition score first in each of their three road tilts. Florida has seen the over hit in four of their nine games on the year. The Panthers have an average total of 5.56 goals per game on the year and that number bumps to six goals per game in their four home tilts. Their last two home games have gone over the total and with the way Vegas has scored in the early going, this game winds up over the number.
