Vegas Golden Knights Looking to End Recent Struggles
Vegas has lost four of its last five games, with three of those defeats coming by at least three goals. The Golden Knights fell 5-2 to New Jersey on Friday after beating Ottawa 4-1 earlier in the week. Vegas also lost to Columbus 2-1 in overtime and gave up six goals apiece against St. Louis and Tampa Bay. Despite those results, the Golden Knights average 3.47 goals per game. Their penalty kill has been a bigger concern, stopping only 69.4% of opponents' chances.
Jack Eichel (20 points) has been Vegas' leading scorer, sitting tied for ninth in the NHL. He has seven goals and 13 assists, while Mark Stone (9 goals, 17 points) has been the team's best finisher. Mitch Marner has helped set up the attack with 13 assists. In net, Adin Hill has won five of seven starts, but his .891 save percentage hasn't been particularly strong. Carter Hart has four wins and a slightly better 2.76 GAA. Vegas needs more from its goaltending after giving up five or more goals in three recent losses.
Injuries: Parker Wotherspoon is out.

Pittsburgh Penguins Looking for Better Results at Home
Pittsburgh returns home after Saturday's 5-4 loss in Montreal, its second straight defeat. The Penguins also fell 4-3 in overtime to Utah on Thursday. Before those losses, Pittsburgh beat Nashville 3-2 in overtime and shut out Florida 4-0. The Penguins have scored at least three goals in four straight games, but have given up nine over their last two. Pittsburgh is allowing 3.43 goals per game this season, despite having a penalty kill that has stopped 85.7% of opposing power plays.
Erik Karlsson (3 goals, 13 assists) has supplied much of Pittsburgh's offense from the blue line, leading the team with 16 points. Evgeni Malkin has scored six goals, while Sidney Crosby and Tommy Novak have 10 points each. Injuries have also reduced Pittsburgh's options up front, with Bryan Rust and Justin Brazeau both unavailable. Arturs Silovs has won five games and recorded two shutouts, although his .889 save percentage suggests there's still room for improvement. Sergey Murashov has yet to win a game in five decisions.
Injuries: Justin Brazeau, Elmer Soderblom, Bryan Rust, Trevor van Riemsdyk and Ryan Graves are out.
Key To The Game
Vegas has struggled to keep opponents off the scoreboard lately, and playing in Boston on Monday adds another challenge. Pittsburgh needs to take advantage of that schedule, especially with the Golden Knights' penalty kill sitting below 70%. The Penguins have scored seven goals across their last two games, but their defense has allowed nine. Eichel and Stone could find room against a Pittsburgh team missing two defensemen.
Vegas Golden Knights vs Pittsburgh Penguins Game Pick
- Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh has played better at home than its overall record suggests, winning four of six games at PPG Paints Arena. Vegas has lost four of its last five outings and faces consecutive road games. The Golden Knights have plenty of scoring talent, but their recent defensive play has been shaky. Pittsburgh's home record and Vegas' demanding schedule make the Penguins my pick.
Vegas Golden Knights vs Pittsburgh Penguins Over/Under Pick
- Over
Vegas has allowed at least five goals in three of its last five games, while Pittsburgh has conceded nine across its last two. Both teams average more than three goals per contest, and neither has received consistently strong goaltending. Eichel and Stone give Vegas scoring threats, while Malkin and Karlsson can create chances for Pittsburgh. I'll take the over.
