Washington Looking to Bounce Back on the Road

Washington had won six of their previous seven games before getting walloped at home by Ottawa Saturday night. The Capitals entered Monday 6-3-0 on the year and tied for third in the Metropolitan Division, four points behind the Devils for the top spot. Washington is tied for 16th in the league in goals per game with three goals per contest on the year. The Capitals are 1st in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 2.33 goals per contest. Washington is 17th in the league in power play success as they have converted 20.7% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Capitals are 28th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 66.7% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against Ottawa, Washington turned in their worst showing of the season as they were trounced by the Senators Saturday night. The Capitals were outshot 8-3 in the opening period and outscored 1-0 to trail by that margin after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, Washington was outshot 11-3 and outscored 3-0 to trail 4-0 at the second intermission. The third period saw the Capitals outshot 15-7 and outscored 3-1 to wind up with the blowout loss. After giving up the first goal of the period to trail 5-0, Trevor van Riemsdyk scored his first of the year at 5:04 off assists from Ryan Leonard and Nic Dowd. That was as close as the Capitals would get in the contest, as Ottawa tallied twice more to close the scoring. Charlie Lindgren made 27 saves for Washington, who was outshot 34-13, in the loss. Logan Thompson (5-1-0, 1.50 GAA, .937 save percentage) is slated to get the start in goal for the Capitals here.

Left wing Pierre-Luc Dubois (lower body) and defenseman Dylan McIlrath (lower body) are out indefinitely. Defenseman Rasmus Sandin (upper body) and center Dylan Strome (lower body) are both out here.

Stars Seeking to Roll at Home

Dallas snapped a four-game skid as they took both ends of a back-to-back set, downing Carolina at home Saturday and followed up with a road win over Nashville Sunday. The Stars entered Monday 5-3-1 and were fourth in the Central Division, five points behind the Mammoth for the top spot. Dallas stands tied for 16th in the league in goals per game as they average three goals per contest on the year. The Stars stand 23rd in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 3.33 goals a night this season. Dallas is 3rd when it comes to success on the power play as they convert on 32.3% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Stars are 27th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 67.9% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Nashville, Dallas shrugged off fatigue and managed to take down the Predators on the road Sunday in the second half of a back-to-back. The Stars were outshot 8-6 in the opening period and trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play. Dallas held a 13-8 advantage in shots in the middle period and outscored Nashville 2-1 to tie the game at two at the second intermission. After falling behind 2-0, Oskar Back got the Stars on the board with his first goal of the season at 9:36 off assists from Radek Faksa and Thomas Harley. Wyatt Johnston tied the score with his sixth goal of the season at 16:29 off an assist from Jason Robertson. In the third period, Dallas saw the shots even at nine and scored the lone goal of the period to earn the win. Mikko Rantanen tallied his fourth goal of the year, on the power play, at 10:44 off assists from Mavrik Bourque and Robertson. Casey DeSmith made 23 saves for the Stars, who held a 28-25 advantage in shots, in the win. Jake Oettinger (4-2-1, 2.98 GAA, .899 save percentage) is expected to get the start in goal for the Stars here.

Centers Matt Duchene (upper body), along with Chase Wheatcroft (wrist), left wing Jamie Benn (upper body), along with defenseman Nils Lundkvist (lower body) is out indefinitely. Center Roope Hintz (undisclosed) is questionable here.

Capitals vs. Stars Pick

Capitals vs. Stars Moneyline Pick

  • Stars -137 (4 units)

Washington looked completely out of sync Saturday night against the Senators as they were thrashed soundly in all facets of the contest. The Capitals have struggled in the penalty killing department and are a middle-of-the-road squad offensively to this point of the year. Dallas has been excellent with the man advantage, ranking third in the league in that department, and should be able to exploit some of Washingtonโ€™s woes. Oettinger hasnโ€™t been as sharp as one would expect but heโ€™s been sound at home in his career. Thompson keeps the Capitals in it, but the Stars find a way to skate away with the two points.

Capitals vs. Stars Over/Under Pick

  • Under 6 (-110) (4 units)

Washington has seen the under post a 4-3-2 mark in their first nine games of the year. The Capitals have an average total of 5.33 goals per game on the season and that number drops to a minuscule 4.33 goals per game as the road squad. Dallas has seen the under post a 5-4 mark in their nine games on the season. The Stars have posted an average total of 6.33 goals per game on the season and that number slips slightly to 6.20 goals per game at home this season. Seven of the last 10 meetings have stayed under the total, and with Thompson being stingy this season, this game winds up falling short of the total.
