Washington hopes offense wakes up
The Capitals are looking to rebound after scoring only one goal in their opening night game at home. Tom Wilson scored a goal, but the rest of the offense struggled. The hope is that all-time leading goal scorer Alexander Ovechkin starts finding the back of the net, as he scored 43 goals last season and is the greatest scorer in league history, but didn’t do much in the recent game. He was limited in the preseason due to an injury so he's trying to find his way back into hockey shape.
The offense struggled but the defense was a bright spot, allowing only three goals, with one coming with the net empty. Jakob Chychrun and John Carlson led the top two pairings while Rasmus Sandin and Trevor van Riemsdyk added depth to the unit, creating turnovers in all three zones and limiting shots on the net. Moreover, goaltender Logan Thompson looked great as he stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced.

Islanders look to bounce back on defense
The Islanders stumbled in their first game despite their offense stepping up and scoring three goals. Jonathan Drouin, Maxim Shabonov, and Kyle Palmieri scored three goals but the rest of the offense has stepped up as well. Mathew Barzal and Simon Holmstrom contributed two assists while defensemen Scott Mayfield and Matthew Schaefer added two assists from the point to open up the offense.
The offense was great but the defense let the Islanders down, allowing four goals in the loss. Alexander Romanov and Anthony DeAngelo led the top pair but the rest of the unit struggled, allowing easy scoring chances throughout the game. Moreover, goaltender Ilya Sorokin struggled in the game, allowing four goals on only 28 shots.
