Minnesota has turned the season around thanks to defense

The Wild are having a rocky season with their offense letting them down, scoring only 2.76 goals per game. Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy have combined for 22 goals and 24 assists, but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only four active skaters have four goals or more and opponents can limit the top-heavy offense as a result.

The offense has struggled, but the defense, which has allowed 3.05 goals per game, has stepped up lately, allowing only five goals in the last three games. Jonas Brodin and Brock Faber have combined for 2.6 defensive point share,s while Zeev Buium and Jared Spurgeon have also stepped up lately, creating turnovers in the defensive zone while limiting shots on the net. In addition, goaltender Filip Gustavsson has stepped up in the net with a .897 save percentage and a 2.99 goals-against average on 409 shots.

Key injury report for Wild

  • Ryan Hartman (lower body) was placed on injured reserve. Had four goals and three assists.
  • Marco Rossi (lower body) was placed on injured reserve and is week-to-week. Had four goals and nine assists

Penguins have been carried by defense

The Penguins are putting together a great season with their offense leading the way, scoring 3.26 goals per game. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have scored 17 goals and 27 assists to lead the top line, but the rest of the offense has stepped up as well. Anthony Mantha and Bryan Rust have combined for 13 goals and 16 assists while defensemen Erik Karlsson and Ryan Shea have added three goals and 18 assists from the point to open up the offense.

The offense has stepped up but the defense has carried them, allowing only 2.47 goals per game with only two goals in their last two games. Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang have combined for 3.2 defensive point share,s while Ryan Shea and Parker Wotherspoon have combined for 2.9 defensive point shares to add depth to the unit. In addition, goaltender Arturs Silovs has stepped up with a .918 save percentage and a 2.44 goals-against average on 304 shots with 6.4 goals saved above average.

Wild vs Penguins Pick

Money Line Pick For Wild vs Penguins

  • Penguins (-110) (4 units)

The Wild have three wins in a row but the Penguins are having a great season and look to take over this game from the first period. The Penguins, who average 3.26 goals per game, should pile on the goals with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and the rest of the forward unit carrying the puck into the offensive zone while creating open shots with quick passes. The Penguins, who allow only 2.47 goals per game, should limit the Wild Offense with Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang, and the rest of the defensive unit creating turnovers in the defensive zone while goaltender Arturs Silovs blanks the shots on the net. The Penguins should win the game with a strong performance on their home ice.

Take the Penguins money line as home Favorites.

Over/Under Pick For Wild vs Penguins

  • Under 6 (5 Units)

The Wild and the Penguins are led by their defenses and this game looks to be a low-scoring one from the opening puck drop. The Wild, who have allowed only five goals in their last three games, should limit the Penguins offense with Brock Faber, Jonas Brodin, and the rest of the defensive unit creating turnovers in the defensive zone while limiting shots on the net, allowing goaltender Filip Gustavsson to make plenty of big saves. The Penguins, who have allowed only two goals in their last two games, should eliminate and potentially shut out the Wild, who average only 2.76 goals per game, with Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang, Ryan Shea, and the rest of the defensive unit forcing turnovers in all three zones while goaltender Arturs Silovs blanks the shots on the net. The Under should cover in a low-scoring game with both defenses stepping up.

Take the Under on 6 goals.

The Wild face the Penguins with both teams looking to improve in the standings.
