Jets hope offense can lead turnaround

The Jets are hoping to snap out of a slump with their offense leading the way, scoring 3.13 goals per game, including five goals in their last game. Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, and Gabriel Vilardi have combined for 36 goals and 45 assists while defenseman Josh Morrissey has added five goals and 18 assists from the point to open up the offense.

The offense has stepped up but the defense, which has allowed only 2.92 goals per game, has been a mess lately, with 18 goals in the last five games. Josh Morrissey and Dylan DeMelo have combined for 4.2 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to carry the puck into the offensive zone while easily finding open shots on the net. Additionally, with Connor Hellebuyck out the Jets must turn to Thomas Milic, who allowed four goals in his last start.

Key injury report for Jets

  • Neal Pionk is day-to-day. Is a key part of the defense.
  • Connor Hellebuyck (knee) is on injured reserve and expected to miss four to six weeks.

Buffalo’s defense is a mess

The Sabres are having a rough season with their offense struggling and scoring only 2.96 goals per game. Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch have 20 goals and 23 assists but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only five skaters have six goals or more, and opponents can limit the top-heavy offense as a result.

The offense has struggled but the defense has let the Sabres down, allowing 3.44 goals per game, including 11 goals in the last three games. Mattias Samuelsson and Owen Power have combined for 2.4 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. In addition, goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luuukkonen played poorly in recent starts, allowing 10 goals in the last four with three goals in the latest start.

Jets vs Sabres Pick

Money Line Pick For Jets vs Sabres

  • Jets (-105) (4 units)

The Jets haven’t been the same without Connor Hellebuyck but their latest win proved they can beat up on terrible teams without him, and the Sabres are one of those teams. The Jets, who average 3.13 goals per game, should pile on the goals against the Sabres, who have allowed 11 goals in the last three games, with Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, and the rest of the forward unit controlling the puck in the offensive zone while creating open shots with quick passes. The Jets look to limit a Sabres offense that averages only 2.96 goals per game with Josh Morrissey and Dylan DeMelo creating turnovers and limiting shots on the net, allowing goaltender Thomas Milic to make plenty of big saves. The Jets should win the game with a strong performance on the road.

Take the Jets money line as road Favorites.

Over/Under Pick For Jets vs Sabres

  • Over 6.5 (5 Units)

The goaltending matchup and two struggling defenses indicate that this game will be a high-scoring one from the opening puck drop. The Sabres should constantly find the back of the net against the Jets, who have allowed 18 goals per game, with Tage Thompson, Alex Tuch, and the rest of the forward unit driving play and creating open looks on the net. The Jets look to build off a five-goal game and run up the score against Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, who has allowed 10 goals in his last four starts, with Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Gabriel Vilardi, and the rest of the forward unit establishing a strong offensive zone presence while creating open shots with quick passes as Josh Morrissey fires shots on the net from the blue line. The Over should cover in a high-scoring game with both offenses stepping up.

Take the Over on 6.5 goals.
