The Jets are on a three-game slide
The Winnipeg Jets have only won three of their previous 10 games overall. Since they lost Connor Hellebuyck due to a knee injury, the Jets have gone 1-3-0, with Eric Comrie guarding the cage on all four occasions.
Winnipeg is winless in three straight outings, losing against the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3, the Minnesota Wild 3-0, and the Washington Capitals 4-3 in the process. Last Wednesday, the Jets were outshot by the Capitals 34-21. Gabriel Vilardi led the way for Winnipeg with two goals, while Kyle Connor made three dishes.
Comrie posted 30 saves against the Caps and fell to 4-4-0 on the season. The 30-year-old netminder has a 3.02 GAA and a .897 save percentage. The 22-year-old rookie Thomas Milic serves as a backup, but Comrie is expected to take on a heavy workload in the next few weeks.
The Jets allow 2.86 goals per game (13th in the NHL) and score 3.14 goals in return (9th). Mark Sheifele leads the way for Winnipeg with 12 goals and 17 assists, while Connor has amassed 11 goals and 17 assists.
The Hurricanes look to snap a two-game skid
The Carolina Hurricanes have struggled a bit of late. They’ve gone 3-3-2 in their past eight games overall. After that narrow victory in Winnipeg, the Canes have dropped consecutive games against the Buffalo Sabres 4-1 and the New York Rangers 4-2.
Frederik Andersen gave up three goals on 20 shots against the Sabres. He yielded three goals on just 17 shots versus the Rangers, falling to 5-6-2 on the season. The Hurricanes outshot the Rangers 38-18, but it wasn’t enough.
Andersen holds a 3.08 GAA and a .878 save percentage. He’s winless in five straight starts. Brandon Bussi is 5-1-0 with a 2.67 GAA and a .897 save percentage, while Pyotr Kochetkov is 4-0-0 with a shiny 1.70 GAA and a .926 save percentage. Kochetkov is considered day-to-day due to an undisclosed injury.
The Hurricanes allow 2.96 goals per game (15th in the NHL) and score 3.43 goals in return (4th). Sebastian Aho leads the charge for Carolina with eight goals and 15 assists, while Seth Jarvis has accounted for 12 goals and seven assists.
Jets vs. Hurricanes Pick
Spread Pick for Jets vs. Hurricanes
- Carolina Hurricanes -1.5 (5 units)
Both teams have goaltending issues. If Pyotr Kochetkov remains on the sidelines, the Hurricanes might turn to Brandon Bussi. Frederik Andersen has struggled a lot this season, while Bussi has been surprisingly solid.
On the other side, the Jets will almost certainly go with Eric Comrie, who has allowed 11 goals over his previous starts. Comrie gave up four goals on 28 shots in a narrow loss to the Hurricanes last Friday.
Despite their awful power-play percentage (10-for-68, 29th in the NHL), the Hurricanes are one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the league. Carolina is lethal at even strength and leads the league in shots on goal. I expect the Canes to beat the Jets once more.
Over/Under Pick for Jets vs. Hurricanes
- Under 6.5 (5 units)
The Hurricanes have allowed the fifth-fewest shots so far this season. But as I noted, Frederik Andersen has been far from his best form. I expect to see Brandon Bussi in the crease on Friday, so I will go with the under on the total. Bussi yielded three goals on 28 shots in that road victory over the Jets.
The Jets need to take a cautious approach and provide solid defense for Eric Comrie. If they allow the Canes to dictate the tempo, Comrie will be in trouble. The Jets are a solid defensive unit, and I think they will be able to contain the Canes for most of the game.
