Oklahoma fresh off key win against Michigan

The Sooners are 2-0 and are coming off of a marquee win to begin their new season. Oklahoma was able to defeat No. 15 Michigan 24-13 in one of the top games of last week’s slate. Oklahoma opened their season with a. 33-point win over Illinois State at home.

This is the third-ever meeting with Temple for the Sooners. Last season, they defeated the Owls  51-3 in Norman, but this is a completely different roster with a new coach. It’s the first time Oklahoma has traveled to Philadelphia to play Temple since 1942. This is also the first road game against a non-Power 4 school since Oklahoma defeated Tulsa in 2023.

In their last game, No. 13 Oklahoma defeated Michigan 24-13 on Saturday, Sept. 6. Oklahoma never trailed as they led 14-0 in the first half. The Sooners defense bent, but they didn’t break with Michigan scoring two field goals in the third quarter.

Oklahoma’s new quarterback John Mateer was great. The Washington State transfer threw for 270 yards on 21-for-34 passing. He tossed a touchdown and an interception while also leading the rushing attack with 74 yards and two scores. Wide receiver Deion Burks had a big game with 101 yards on seven catches and a touchdown. The Sooners defense was great as they forced Michigan to go 3-for-14 on third and 0-for-1 on fourth down.

"He's a real weapon in running the ball. He does, to your point, has really good instincts as a runner. Great lateral quickness,” Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables said about his quarterback. “Ability to change direction He's an explosive runner. Very efficient. He's got to do a good job not taking too many shots. Goes with the territory. He's built strong. He's really compact, so he can absorb some hits. It's a real weapon. Keeps defenses in a really tough predicament, because he can throw the ball, has great ability there as well.”

Although it’s just two games, Oklahoma is the 16th-ranked passing offense, averaging 331 yards per game. They rank 42nd in total yards and 106th in rushing yards per game.

On defense, the Sooners rank 18th in total yards allowed. They are the sixth-best pass defense, giving up 88 yards per game. Oklahoma is allowing 131.5 rushing yards per game, placing them 70th.

Oklahoma is 1-1 against the spread this season. They covered as a 4-point favorite against Michigan. The Sooners failed to cover as a 39.5-point favorite versus FCS Illinois State as Oklahoma won 35-3. The under is 2-0 during Oklahoma games this season.

Temple starting season strong under new head coach

Temple is 2-0 this season under first-year head coach KC Keeler. The head coach arrives from Sam Houston State where he was the coach there for a decade. He was also the coach for Delaware for 10 years prior this stint.

Keeler and his Owls are off to a strong start with two wins over Howard and UMass. They were favored in both games and were able to cover the spread in both.

In their last game, Temple defeated Howard 55-7 at home on Saturday, Sept. 6. Quarterback Evan Simon threw for 174 yards and three touchdowns as he passed for 8-for-10. The Owls rushed for 329 yards with three players going over 50 yards. Jay Ducker led the team with 87 yards and a touchdown. In the first game of the season, Ducker rushed for 128 yards against UMass. He’s a key new piece for the Owls as the sixth-year running back followed Keeler from Sam Houston State.

Eric Stuart leads the defense with nine total tackles. Cam’Ron Stewart has been great, too. He has a team-high three sacks while the entire defense has forced three turnovers this season.

"It's going to be important for us to get as many hits on him as possible," Keeler said about Oklahoma’s John Mateer this week. "It's a cumulative thing.  He took 19 rushing hits, also a couple hits in the pocket on top of that.  So those kind of things add up.  I'm sure our kid would be really sore if he took that many hits.  And when he pulls the ball down and becomes a running back, he has to pay the price.”

Through the first two weeks, Temple is averaging 513.5 yards per game, which ranks 21st in the nation. They rank 50th in passing yards and 15th in rushing yards per game. They are also averaging 48.5 points per game, placing them 14th.

On defense, the Owls are allowing 211.5 yards per game, which ranks 14th. They are the 15th-ranked pass defense, giving up 119 yards through the air. They are also the 37th-ranked rush defense while they are also allowing 8.5 points per gam,e which ranks 13th.

Temple is 2-0 against the spread this season. They have covered as a 28-point favorite against Howard and as a 2.5-point favorite versus UMass. The over is 2-0 this year in Temple games, too.

Spread Pick for Oklahoma Sooners vs Temple Owls

  • Temple Owls +23 (5 units)

Oklahoma comes into this game riding high after beating Michigan. But this is a total trap game for the Sooners. After their biggest win of the season against Auburn last year, the Sooners lost three straight games. If they are to fall into this type of scenario again, it starts on the road in Philadelphia. The Sooners’ defense is elite and they looked great against Michigan, but in a low-scoring game against the Owls, Temple can keep it close with one of the best running backs for smaller schools.

Running back Jay Ducker has played well through the first two games and under new head coach KC Keeler, this is a much different Temple team than the one that was blown out in Norman last season. The Owls have looked stronger on the defensive side of the ball. This will be a low-scoring game because of Temple’s dependency on the run, along with Oklahoma’s lack of run game. If the Owls can shut down the pass, they can keep this game close in their home stadium. Oklahoma will win, but this spread is too big for this trap game.

Take the Owls to cover.

Over/Under Pick for Oklahoma vs Temple

  • Under 51.5 (5 units)

Oklahoma’s defense is elite. Michigan struggled to move the ball all game against them a week ago. Even against FCS Illinois State, the back-ups for Oklahoma did not allow an inch. Defense travels and it is hard to see Temple scoring more than a few times in this game. Now, the offense for Oklahoma will be challenged on the road and their reliance on the pass game will make them fail to move the chains. Temple’s secondary has looked much improved in the first part of the season. The under is 2-0 during Oklahoma games this season.

Take the under on Saturday.
