Padres snapped losing streak
San Diego entered Saturday comfortably holding the second wild card spot in the NL despite a five-game losing streak. The Padres snapped that skid by jumping out to a 10-2 lead in the fifth inning on Saturday and never looked back. Now they’ll try to secure the series on Sunday.
The Padres have leaned on a pitching staff that ranks fourth in MLB with a 3.66 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. Offensively, the story is less impressive. San Diego is 10th in batting average (.251), but they rank just 20th in scoring at 4.2 runs per game and 29th in home runs with 122.
Sunday’s starter Dylan Cease enters with a 6-11 record, 4.81 ERA, and 190 strikeouts in 146 innings. While the Rockies have been dreadful, Cease has been a liability on the road, carrying a 0-8 record and 5.81 ERA across 14 away starts.
Worst in MLB
Colorado’s nightmare season sits at 40-102 with very few bright spots. The Rockies own MLB’s worst ERA (5.97) and WHIP (1.60). Their offense is 29th in scoring (3.8 runs per game) and 24th in home runs (140). Hunter Goodman (.275 AVG, 23 HR) has been one of the few bright spots in the lineup. Defensively, Colorado’s 101 errors rank 29th, compounding the struggles.
Tanner Gordon (5-5, 6.07 ERA, 1.58 WHIP) gets the start Sunday. While his season-long numbers are poor, he’s been much sharper recently, going 3-0 with a 2.74 ERA over his last four starts. At home, Gordon has posted a respectable 4-2 record with a 4.50 ERA.
Padres vs. Rockies Pick
Spread Pick for Padres vs. Rockies
- Rockies ML +192 (4 units)
Colorado has won each of Gordon’s last four starts, and those victories came against quality competition—the Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Astros, and Cubs. He's pitching well lately and at this price, the Rockies are worth a look.
Over/Under Pick for Padres vs. Rockies
- Under 11.5 (4 units)
Gordon has been throwing well and has actually fared better at Coors Field than on the road. Both of these lineups lack power and sit in the bottom third of the league in scoring. Even with Cease’s struggles, San Diego has held opponents to four runs or fewer in six of his last nine starts. Take the under.
