Wednesday’s clash between Texas and Houston is their final encounter of the season. The Rangers have won six of their first 11 meetings with the Astros in 2025. Now, let’s take a closer look at this Rangers vs. Astros prediction, one of our MLB picks for Wednesday’s card. The first pitch at Daikin Park is set at 8:10 PM ET.
The Rangers desperately need a win
The Texas Rangers fell to 79-72 on the season following Monday’s 6-3 defeat at Daikin Park. They outhit the Astros 10-6 on the night, but it wasn’t enough. Texas went 2-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base while committing a couple of costly errors.

The Rangers were three games behind the Astros on Tuesday morning, and Houston held the final wild card in the American League. Texas has won 13 of its previous 18 games overall, but the Rangers desperately need to stay on track if they want to sneak into the playoffs.
Jacob deGrom will toe the slab at Daikin Park on Wednesday. The 37-year-old right-hander is 12-7 with a sharp 2.82 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 28 starts (162.2 innings pitched) this season. Last Friday, deGrom threw seven innings of a three-run ball in an 8-3 road victory over the New York Mets.
Houston will meet deGrom for the fourth time this season. In their previous three encounters, deGrom has gone 1-1 while allowing five earned runs on 14 hits and four walks through 19.1 innings of work. The two-time Cy Young Award winner has served four home runs to the Astros so far this season.
The Astros continue to chase the Mariners
The Houston Astros managed to score six runs (three earned) off Jack Leiter last Monday. They went 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position, while four relievers combined for 4.1 scoreless innings. Yordan Alvarez suffered an ankle injury in the first inning and was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday.
The Astros advanced to 82-69 on the season following Monday’s victory over the Rangers. Houston has been shaky as of late, losing seven of their previous 14 games overall, and the Astros have dropped their lead in the AL West. They were half a game behind the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday morning.
Cristian Javier will take the mound on Wednesday night, and the 28-year-old right-hander carries a 1-3 record with a 4.78 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in six starts (26.1 IP) in 2025. Last Thursday, Javier gave up four earned runs on six hits and a walk through six innings of work in a 6-0 road loss against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Javier is 6-1 with a 3.71 ERA in 11 career starts and four relief appearances against the Rangers. He’ll meet Texas for the first time this season, and the current Rangers are 14-for-77 with a couple of doubles and home runs against Javier.
Rangers vs. Astros Pick
Moneyline Pick for Rangers vs. Astros
- Texas Rangers (5 units)
Cristian Javier made his season debut on August 11, and it seems like he’s still building up his form. Javier has allowed four earned runs in each of his last two starts, but he pitched six hitless innings against the Angels on August 29. He has a strong record against the Rangers, and it will be interesting to see if he can bounce back from a couple of rough outings against the Yankees and Blue Jays.
On the other side, Jacob deGrom started the month of September with a home loss against the Astros. He gave up three earned runs in a heavy 11-0 defeat while punching out eight across 5.1 frames of work. However, deGrom is having a great season, and he’s registered a strong 2.63 ERA and 3.66 FIP over his previous five starts.
Frankly, this game could easily go either way. Both bullpens have done a solid job over the last 10 days (Texas 3.26 ERA, Houston 3.34 ERA), while the lineups haven’t impressed. I will lean on deGrom and take the Rangers.
Over/Under Pick for Rangers vs. Astros
- Under 7.5 (5 units)
The Rangers have recorded a .663 OPS and 92 wRC+ against the right-handed pitchers in the past 10 days. During that span, the Astros have registered a .718 OPS and 101 wRC+ against the righties.
Hereof, I expect a solid performance from the starting duo. As I mentioned above, these two bullpens have been pitching well of late, so I’m not looking for a high-scoring affair. Moreover, the Rangers are without Corey Seager, and Marcus Semien is doubtful to play, while the Astros will almost certainly miss Yordan Alvarez.
Give me the under, even though I don’t feel comfortable with a 7.5-run line.
