Khachanov's challenge is creating enough scoreboard pressure on return. Zverev has looked increasingly comfortable once ahead, and another series of routine holds would make a straight-sets result very plausible.

The Russian therefore needs his own service games to remain short. If Zverev is repeatedly getting looks at second serves, Khachanov will struggle to keep the match close.

Neither American took a simple route into Friday night.

Tiafoe trailed Alex Michelsen by two sets and a break before producing one of the tournament's best comebacks. He won 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6, surviving a match in which Michelsen served for the victory before Tiafoe finally found his rhythm.

Shelton's quarterfinal was even more dramatic. He defeated defending champion Alcaraz 6-7, 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 in four hours and 28 minutes. Shelton won nine consecutive games during one stretch and finished the match with a 146 mph ace.

Surface and Matchup

The obvious advantage for Shelton is the left-handed serve. When he gets ahead in service games, Tiafoe can spend long stretches without seeing a realistic break opportunity.

Tiafoe has the more varied return position and can change the tempo more effectively once rallies begin. He will want to prevent Shelton from repeatedly following the serve with an easy forehand, then use his speed and touch to make the younger American hit extra balls.
