Not Much Hype in Chicago

This would have been a nationally televised game if possible, but the storied rivalry between Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark will have to wait for the next installment, as neither will play in this game. The Chicago Sky will play this game without their star forward, as Angel Reese, as she picked up her 8th technical foul of the season and will serve the mandated one game suspension. The Sky are ranked 11th in the overall standings, and are already eliminated from playoff contention.

The Sky are coming off a strong 88-64 win over Connecticut, though it is worth noting that the Sun are 12th in the overall standings, and Angel Reese did play in that game. Reese will be out here, leaving Kamilla Cardoso as their top scoring threat on the team. She is a 6'7 center who controls the paint with 13.4 PPG and 8.4 RPG, she had a 16 point, 5 rebound performance in their recent win over the Sun. Their top perimeter player will be Ariel Atkins, she is a 5'10 guard in her first season with the Sky after playing with the Mystics for her first seven seasons. Atkins is getting 13.2 PPG and 3.7 APG on the season.

The Sky are ranked 12th out of 13 teams in the league in scoring with 76.1 points per game, and their defense ranks 10th by giving up 85.4 per game. Chicago is not prolific from deep, as they rank 10th by making just 6.7 threes per game.

Fever Drop Two Straight

The Indiana Fever will enter this game off back-to-back losses, as the team is reeling after having high hopes coming into the season. The headline for this Fever team is that they did not expect Caitlin Clark to play in only 13 games coming into this September matchup. Clark was scoring 16.5 PPG in her games, but she has not played since July 15th. In their last game, the Fever lost by six on the road against Phoenix despite getting 29 points from Kelsey Mitchell in the loss.

Mitchell has been their leading scorer all season and has picked up the scoring deficit created with the Clark injury. The 29-year-old guard is averaging 20.5 PPG this season to go with 3.4 APG as their primary ballhandler. She has been with the Fever all of her eight WNBA seasons, scoring in double figures every year while averaging a career high this season. Aliyah Boston is still healthy as a presence in the middle. The 23-year-old post player is averaging 15.2 PPG and 8.2 RPG on the inside. The Fever are currently 8th in the overall standings, but have not locked up their playoff berth yet.

Indiana is ranked 4th in the league in scoring with 84.4 points per game, with their defense ranking 9th by allowing 82.2 per game. Without Clark, the team is just 8th in the league in outside shooting with 6.8 threes per game.

Spread Pick for Sky vs. Fever

  • Chicago Sky +13.5 (4 units)

I know the Sky will be without Angel Reese, but there comes a point where the line gets too high to ignore, and we have hit that number here. Chicago is getting nearly two touchdowns in this WNBA matchup. This is far too many points, as they have not lost any of their last five games by that margin. Reese is a strong presence, but not a massive scorer, she is not going to impact the spread by this massive of a number. Indiana is still without Clark, and while they do still have a shot at the postseason, they will not overpower this Chicago team in this game. The number is too big here, take the points.

Take the Sky to cover.

Over/Under Pick for Chicago Sky vs. Indiana Fever Pick

  • Under (4 units)

In what should have been a made for TV moment in the WNBA, these teams will both be without their superstar player, which will limit the scoring in an under. Caitlin Clark has only played in 13 games this season, drastically changing the makeup of this Fever team. They now only have two scorers, and Boston is a post player who eats up time off the clock to get a good look. The Fever have even fewer scorers, and no longer have Reese to create second-chance opportunities for their offense. Expect both teams to be slightly deflated as this game stays under the number.

Take the under.
