Chicago Suspends Star

The Chicago Sky are bringing back Angel Reese, but only for a half. They suspended their only All-Star this season for comments detrimental to the team, and this is coming right after she was suspended for accumulating too many technical fouls. With or without Reese, the Sky are having a difficult season with their 10-31 record and 4-16 road record. Chicago is already eliminated from playoff contention and will look to rebuild their roster in the offseason. In their last game, the Sky lost by 20 on the road against the Fever.

Reese will only play in the second half of this game, which will throw off the subs and rotations for the Sky heading into this one. Reese will get her fill of minutes, as the Sky need her and her 14.7 PPG and 12.6 RPG. Reese will shake off the rust after sitting the last game out, serving a suspension for a separate reason. The Sky got 18 points and nine rebounds from Kamilla Cardoso last time out. She is another post player who helps to share the paint with Reese. Cardoso is averaging 13.5 PPG and 8.3 RPG on the year. Their top perimeter player is Ariel Atkins, who is averaging 13.1 PPG as their top outside threat.

Chicago ranks 12th out of 13 teams in the WNBA in scoring with 76.1 points per game, and their defense ranks 10th by giving up 85.7 points per game. The Sky are 10th in the league in outside shooting with 6.6 threes per game.

Aces Climb the Standings

The Las Vegas Aces were a middle-of-the-pack team near the All-Star Break, but a strong second half has propelled them into third in the standings, with a strong chance to still grab that number two seed as the whole league trails Minnesota. The Aces have won a red-hot 13 straight games, and just took down the Lynx, who are on top of the standings. The Aces are just a half-game out of the two seed in the overall standings.

Las Vegas is coming off a 10-point home win over Minnesota last time out, though it is worth noting that the Lynx already had the number one seed locked up coming into that matchup. The Aces are powered by A'ja Wilson, as she leads the team with 23.6 PPG and 10.1 RPG. Wilson is coming off a 31-point, 8-rebound game in their last game against Minnesota. Jackie Young is their top scoring threat from the outside, she is getting 16.5 PPG and is knocking down 34.5% of her attempts from long distance. Chelsea Gray is another scorer in double figures, getting 11.1 PPG and is a 5'11 guard.

The Aces are ranked 6th in scoring with 83.0 points per game, and their defense is ranked 8th by giving up 81.7 per game. Las Vegas comes in at 7th in outside shooting, making 7.6 threes per game.

Spread Pick for Sky vs. Aces

  • Las Vegas Aces -16.5 (4 units)

Laying this many points never feels good, but everything is aligning for the Aces, as they will easily control this game and enjoy their blowout win. First off, Angel Reese will be out for the first half of this game. Utilizing a star player only for a half does not bode well for rhythm and chemistry, and is honestly the type of suspension we see in high school programs, not the professional ranks. So, Reese will miss the first two quarters, as A'ja Wilson will completely dominate the paint without Reese to battle inside. The Sky then need to adjust at halftime to new lineups, and on top of this, Chicago has no chance of making the playoffs this season. Las Vegas still wants that number two seed and will cruise to an easy win here.

Take the Aces to cover.

Over/Under Pick for Chicago Sky vs. Las Vegas Aces Pick

  • Under (4 units)

Chicago is not going to put up a big number here. They should have just suspended Angel Reese for the entire game, because how is she going to hold when she comes in the third quarter and the team is already down double digits. Reese is a tough defender and rebounder, but not an electric scorer; she will not boost the scoring for Chicago, just improve their efforts on the other end. Las Vegas can play this game at a slow pace and still easily cruise to a win.

Take the under.
