Chicago Sky vs New York Liberty Preview

Chicago enters at 15-24 after losing 87-81 at Connecticut on Tuesday. The Sky have dropped two straight after a three-game winning streak, but they remain more competitive against the spread than their straight-up record suggests.

Kamilla Cardoso is the centerpiece of the offense. She has developed into Chicago’s most dependable interior scorer and rebounder, giving the Sky a way to attack New York through the paint instead of relying entirely on a depleted guard rotation.

Chicago’s backcourt injuries are the biggest concern. Without Cloud, Carrington and Diggins, the Sky have fewer experienced ball-handlers and defenders available against Sabrina Ionescu and New York’s perimeter attack.

Sydney Taylor and the remaining guards therefore need to protect the ball and make enough open shots to keep New York from loading extra defenders toward Cardoso.

The Sky are 21-18 ATS in the broader market data. That record is far better than their 15-24 straight-up mark and is one of the strongest arguments for taking more than three possessions with Chicago.

New York enters at 23-16 after a 79-60 home loss to Golden State on Thursday. The Liberty shot only 30.2 percent from the field and 7-of-31 from three, producing their lowest-scoring game of the season.

Sabrina Ionescu has been in a prolonged shooting slump, including a 2-for-12 performance against the Valkyries. New York still has enough shooting talent to rebound quickly, but laying 8.5 becomes more difficult when its primary perimeter creator is not converting consistently.

Breanna Stewart remains the most reliable scorer and two-way matchup problem. She finished with 16 points against Golden State and continues to give New York a player who can score from the post, attack closeouts and defend multiple positions.

Jones was New York’s best offensive player in the Golden State loss, scoring 18 points while making four three-pointers. Her ability to stretch Cardoso away from the basket is a major tactical advantage for the Liberty.

New York is 14-25 ATS despite its winning straight-up record. The Liberty have repeatedly been priced like an elite team without consistently producing the margin needed to cover.

That contrast is especially important against Chicago because the season series has been much tighter than the standings suggest.

New York leads the series 2-1, but the first two Liberty wins came by a single point. New York won 96-95 on June 17 and 95-94 on July 22.

Chicago won the most recent meeting 93-86 on August 18. That gives the Sky a 1-2 straight-up record but a 3-0 result against Saturday’s current +8.5 spread.

All three meetings also cleared the current total. The games produced 191, 189 and 179 combined points.

Chicago is 22-17 to the over in current market records, while New York is 24-16. Both teams have consistently produced more high-scoring than low-scoring games this season.

The total opened 178.5 and has generally remained in the 178.5-to-179.5 range. That stability makes the current number a cleaner decision point than a game that has already moved several points.

Matchup Breakdown

Chicago needs to make New York defend Cardoso on nearly every half-court possession. The Sky cannot win a perimeter shot-making contest with their current guard rotation, so creating paint touches and free throws is essential.

New York should use Jones away from the rim and force Cardoso to defend in space. If the Liberty can pull Chicago’s best rebounder away from the basket, Stewart and the wings can attack the resulting gaps.

The WNBA betting trends strongly favor Chicago against the number. The Sky are 21-18 ATS, while New York is only 14-25.

The head-to-head margins strengthen that case. Chicago has not lost to New York by more than one point this season and won the most recent meeting by seven.

The injuries keep this from becoming an aggressive upset call, but the number is large enough to absorb some of Chicago’s personnel disadvantage.

Game Thesis: New York should rebound offensively and win at home, but the Liberty have struggled badly against the spread and have not separated from Chicago in any of the three meetings. Chicago +8.5 is the preferred wager, with New York projected to win 93-89.

Chicago Sky vs New York Liberty Best Bet - Spread: Chicago Sky +8.5

New York is 14-25 ATS, while Chicago has been the more reliable spread team despite its weaker straight-up record.

The three season meetings are even more compelling. Chicago lost the first two by one point and won the third by seven, meaning the Sky have stayed comfortably inside +8.5 every time.

New York’s 14-5 home record prevents an outright Chicago prediction, especially with the Sky missing multiple guards.

The spread creates enough protection. Chicago +8.5 is playable, and +9 or +9.5 would be even stronger.

Chicago Sky vs New York Liberty Moneyline Pick: No Bet

Chicago has already beaten New York once and nearly won the other two meetings, so the +300 price has some upset appeal.

The injury situation makes the spread safer than requiring an outright road victory. New York remains the more likely winner.

Chicago Sky vs New York Liberty Spread Pick: Chicago Sky +8.5

Chicago has stayed within one point or won outright in all three meetings.

New York’s 14-25 ATS record makes laying more than three possessions difficult even at Barclays Center.

Chicago Sky vs New York Liberty Total Pick: Over 178.5

The three season meetings produced 191, 189 and 179 points, all above Saturday’s number.

Chicago is 22-17 to the over and New York is 24-16. New York’s poor showing against Golden State is a concern, but this matchup has consistently generated enough offense to clear the high 170s.

Prediction: New York Liberty 93, Chicago Sky 89
