Connecticut Climbs Out of the Basement
The Connecticut Sun have not had a season to brag about, but they have been the last-place team in the league for the majority of the season, and were finally able to climb out of last place. They were 13th in the league for most of the year, but have now climbed up to 11th. Unfortunately for the Sun, they are now mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. In their last game, the Sun got 22 points and eight rebounds from Tina Charles in the loss.
Charles is in the final years of her career and is no longer able to carry a team to a postseason run. With that said, she is still able to carry the team to individual victories, and is averaging 16.4 PPG and 6.0 RPG on the year. Charles is now 36 years old, and has bounced around the WNBA since 2010. Leila Lecan has 17 points in their recent loss, the 21-year old is a building block for the future, and is averaging 10.3 PPG and 4.0 APG as a guard out of France.
The Sun rank 12th out of 13 teams in scoring with 76.3 points per game, and their defense ranks 10th by giving up 85.9 per game. Connecticut is 12th in the league in outside shooting, making just 6.3 threes per game.
Sky Lose Nine of Ten
The Chicago Sky are another one of the WNBA teams who are already eliminated from postseason contention. Their star forward Angel Reese has made her way back to the lineup after an injury, but is also starring in a movie with Idris Elba, which will be released soon. She is still one of the strongest rebounders in the league, but that has not been enough to carry the team to success. Chicago is 12th in the overall standings, only passing out Dallas who is two games behind them.
Reese is their top performer and is not just relying on her name recognition, as she leads the team with 14.6 PPG and 12.6 RPG. Reese is a force in the middle and is leading the league in rebounding in just her second season in the league. Reese has had double-doubles in each of her last three games, including a 15-point, 20-rebound game against the Mercury. They lost by 10 in their last game against the Storm. Reese scored 20, and Michaela Onyenwere added another 11 after averaging just 5.0 as a 26-year-old guard out of UCLA.
The Sky are ranked last in the league in scoring with 75.8 points per game, and their defense is ranked 11th by giving up 86.0 per game. Chicago is 10th in the league in outside shooting with 6.7 threes per game.
Chicago Sky -1.5 (4 units)
This is the right time to back Chicago. They are one of the bottom teams in the league, but that will not matter here as the Sun have been in the bottom of the standings all season. Most importantly for Chicago is that Angel Reese is back in the lineup after missing weeks with an injury. She is not as talented as her fellow classmate Caitlin Clark, but that does not mean she is lacking a strong presence in every game she plays. Reese is the best rebounder in the league, and has quietly increased her scoring totals. Chicago will give Connecticut a loss, as the Sun are preparing to shut down their season.
Take the Sky to win
Under (4 units)
Two of the lowest-scoring teams in the WNBA meet in this matchup, and neither will be playing at a fast pace. The Sky recently welcomed back Angel Reese, she changes their lineup, but also slows the game down as she looks to opportunities in the post, and creates extra possessions for her team with offensive rebounds. Every extra possession for the Sky is less time for the Sun to have the ball. The Sun are built around Tina Charles, a 36-year-old center, she is talented but will not be flying up and down the floor in a high-scoring game.
Take the under.
