The Wings are slumping big-time
The Dallas Wings have only won one of their previous 14 games overall. They are winless in eight straight outings, and the lowly Wings own the worst record in the WNBA. Dallas has been eliminated from playoff contention, missing the postseason for the second consecutive year.
The Wings are coming off Monday’s 96-71 defeat at the Minnesota Lynx. Dallas failed to cover a huge 18.5-point spread, shooting just 38.8% from the field (3-for-15 from deep). Paige Bueckers led the way with 17 points, while Amy Okonkwo, Maddy Siegrist, and Diamond Miller accounted for 12 points each.
Dallas scores 81.5 points per game (9th in the WNBA) on 42.1% shooting from the field (11th). The Wings allow 88.3 points in return (13th) on 46.2% shooting from the field (12th), and Dallas is arguably the worst defensive team in the league.
The Valkyries shoot for their fifth straight W
The Golden State Valkyries continue to impress in their inaugural WNBA season. They’ve won eight of their previous 11 games overall and are undefeated in four straight outings. Golden State holds the No. 6 seed.
The Valkyries are coming off Tuesday’s 66-58 home victory over the New York Liberty. Golden State held the reigning WNBA champions to 31.6% shooting from the field while making 37.3% of its field goals (7-for-26 from deep). Temi Fagbenle led the Valkyries with 16 points and five rebounds, and Kate Martin added 11 points and three boards.
Golden State scores 78.5 points per game (10th in the league) on 41.0% shooting from the field (13th). On the other side of the ball, the Valkyries allow just 76.4 points per contest (1st) on 40.4% shooting from the field (also 1st).
Golden State Valkyries -9.0 (5 units)
The Valkyries might be the best defensive unit in the league. They will shut the Wings down and beat the number. The Wings have serious injury problems. Dallas missed seven players last Monday, including Arike Ogunbowale (15.5 PPG), Haley Jones (7.9 PPG), and Aziaha James (7.4 PPG).
Golden State’s offense is far from an elite level, but the Valkyries will get things going against the Wings, who have yielded 90 or more points in five straight outings. Dallas is dead last in the WNBA in opposing 3-point percentage (39.0%), and Golden State leads the league in 3-point rate (.463).
The Wings are 0-5 ATS in their last five games overall. On the other side, the Valkyries have covered the spread in each of their previous four showings at any location.
Over 158.0 (5 units)
The last time these two teams met, the Valkyries defeated the Wings 90-81 as 1.5-point road favorites on August 24, and the game flew over the 157.5-point line. I expect another high-scoring affair when the Valkyries host the Wings.
As I noted, Dallas is a terrible defensive team. The Wings play at the second-fastest pace in the WNBA, and the Valkyries won’t mind joining the party, even though Golden State plays at the slowest pace in the league. Three of the Wings’ last four games have gone over the total.
