Minnesota Lynx vs Connecticut Sun Preview

Minnesota remains the best straight-up team in the league despite Friday's loss to New York. The Lynx are 31-10 and have gone 17-3 away from home, giving them the strongest road record on Sunday's slate.

Their balance is the reason. Olivia Miles has become a high-level lead creator, Kayla McBride remains one of the league's most dangerous perimeter shooters and Napheesa Collier gives Minnesota a scorer who can operate from the post, elbows or perimeter.

Minnesota averages roughly 91 points per game and has enough shot creation to overwhelm bad defenses without relying on one player to carry the offense.

The loss to New York was still a useful warning. The Liberty beat Minnesota 93-81 by controlling the physical areas of the game and holding the Lynx to 27.3 percent from three. Miles scored 20 and all five Minnesota starters reached double figures, but the offense never created the same spacing it normally gets.

Connecticut is not New York defensively, but the Sun have already shown they can make this matchup uncomfortable.

The teams split two meetings in July. Connecticut won 90-89 in Minnesota on July 6, then Minnesota answered with an 86-80 road victory two nights later.

Those results are important because neither game approached Sunday's 17.5-point spread. Connecticut has been one of the league's weakest teams overall, but it has already played Minnesota competitively twice.

The Sun enter at 10-31 after getting overwhelmed by Atlanta. Connecticut scored only 59 points and had just one player reach double figures in the 44-point loss.

That offensive ceiling is even more concerning with Griner and Nelson-Ododa unavailable. Connecticut loses size, interior scoring and rebounding against a Minnesota team that is already more efficient at nearly every position.

The return of Miller and Lacan helps. Miller gives the Sun another wing capable of attacking closeouts, while Lacan adds ball pressure and secondary creation.

Saniya Rivers and Aaliyah Edwards will still need to carry larger roles. Edwards is Connecticut's most reliable physical scorer, and Rivers has to create enough transition opportunities to keep the Sun from spending the entire afternoon in the half court.

The season-long betting records are not especially friendly to either side. Minnesota is 20-19 ATS, while Connecticut is 18-23.

The difference is the number. The market is currently spread between Minnesota -15.5 and -17.5, while the board here offers Connecticut +17.5. That gives the underdog roughly two extra points compared with the shorter versions available elsewhere.

The total is sitting around 167.5 to 168. That is reasonable given Connecticut's offensive limitations and Minnesota's ability to score into the 90s.

The WNBA betting trends do not point strongly toward either total direction. Minnesota is 22-18 O/U, while Connecticut is 21-20.

The spread creates the clearer price decision.

Minnesota should control the glass and can attack Connecticut's shortened frontcourt through Collier and Miles. If the Sun turn the ball over, the Lynx can build a double-digit lead quickly because few teams convert transition chances more efficiently.

Connecticut's route to a cover is not complicated. The Sun need to slow the pace, protect the ball and force Minnesota to execute through longer possessions.

That approach worked in both July meetings. Connecticut did not need to match Minnesota's talent possession for possession because the games stayed close enough for its physicality to matter.

The home setting is also significant. Connecticut is only 7-13 at Mohegan Sun Arena, but this is part of the franchise's final home week before its move to Houston. There should be more energy in the building than the record would normally suggest.

Minnesota also comes into the game after a difficult Friday night in Minneapolis and a trip east, while Connecticut has had additional rest since Thursday.

None of that makes the Sun the more likely winner. It does make 17.5 points look inflated relative to the matchup history and current market range.

Minnesota can win comfortably and still fail to cover. A 12- to 15-point Lynx victory would fit the overall talent gap while rewarding anyone taking the largest available dog number.

Game Thesis: Minnesota is clearly the superior team, but the market is asking the Lynx to win by at least 18 points on the road against an opponent that already played them within one and six points this season. With +17.5 available while other books sit shorter, Connecticut has the better spread value.

Minnesota Lynx vs Connecticut Sun Best Bet - Spread: Connecticut Sun +17.5

Connecticut's recent form is ugly, but this wager is about the price rather than an expectation that the Sun threaten for an upset.

Minnesota beat Connecticut by only six in the previous game at Mohegan Sun Arena, and the Sun won the first meeting outright.

The current +17.5 creates an enormous cushion compared with both earlier margins.

Connecticut also gets Miller and Lacan back into the rotation, which gives the Sun more perimeter options than they had in Thursday's blowout loss.

Minnesota should still win behind its superior depth and shot creation, but laying this many points on the road leaves very little room for a late Connecticut run.

Connecticut +17.5 is the preferred wager.

Prediction: Minnesota Lynx 89, Connecticut Sun 74
