The Lynx hope for a bounce-back performance
The Minnesota Lynx are coming off Thursday’s 97-87 defeat at the Las Vegas Aces. After consecutive wins at the Connecticut Sun 94-70 and to the Dallas Wings 96-71, the Lynx failed to cope with a much stronger opposition.
Minnesota shot 53.7% from the field (9-for-22 from deep) this past Thursday. However, Las Vegas made 55.1% of its field goals while going 11-for-24 from downtown. The Lynx missed five of their 11 free throws and just couldn’t make the stops down the stretch.
Natisha Hiedeman dropped 22 points on the Aces. She also had six rebounds, five assists, and four steals in 28 minutes off the bench. Courtney Williams accounted for 14 points and four assists, and Napheesa Collier added 12 points and six boards.
The Lynx are topping the WNBA, five games above Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Phoenix. Minnesota leads the league in points scored (87.0 per game) and ranks third in points allowed (77.2). Collier leads the way with 23.1 points and 7.5 rebounds, while Williams tallies 13.9 points and 6.3 assists a night.
The Valkyries eye the sixth straight W
The Golden State Valkyries are coming off Thursday’s 84-80 home victory over the Dallas Wings. The Valkyries extended their winning streak to five games but failed to cover a 10.5-point spread. Golden State scored 52 points in the second half, erasing a 13-point deficit.
The Valkyries made 44.6% of their field goals last Thursday. They went 7-for-20 from beyond the 3-point line and 19-for-23 from the charity stripe. The Valkyries turned the ball over 15 times, six more than the Wings, but Golden State outrebounded Dallas 38-31 on the night.
Janelle Salaun tortured the Wings for 19 points and six rebounds. Veronica Burton and Carla Leite accounted for 15 points and five assists each, while Monique Billings posted a line of 11 points, seven boards, and three assists.
The Valkyries cannot count on Kayla Thornton (14.0 PPG, 7.0 RPG) and Tiffany Hayes (11.7 PPG, 3.8 RPG) due to injuries. Golden State leads the WNBA in points allowed (76.5 per game) and ranks 10th in points scored (78.6).
Minnesota Lynx vs. Golden State Valkyries Pick
Spread Pick for Minnesota Lynx vs. Golden State Valkyries
- Golden State Valkyries +7.0 (5 units)
The Lynx have nothing to play for. They’ve already clinched the No. 1 seed. On the other side, the Valkyries clinched the playoff berth last Thursday, but they can finish anywhere between the fifth and eighth spot. At the moment, the Valkyries hold the No. 6 seed.
The last time these two teams met, Minnesota covered a 9.5-point spread at home while leading by as many as 15 points. Napheesa Collier dropped 22 points on Golden State, and the Lynx allowed just eight free throws to their rivals.
I expect a tighter battle this time around. The Valkyries will be fired up to pull off an upset on the home floor and continue to chase the No. 5 seed. Their defense has been outstanding all season, so I’m backing the Valkyries to slow Minnesota down and cover the spread.
Over/Under Pick for Minnesota Lynx vs. Golden State Valkyries
- Under 155.0 (5 units)
As I noted above, the Valkyries lead the league in points allowed per game, and the Lynx rank third in this category. When it comes to pace, Golden State is dead last in the WNBA with 74.7 possessions per 40 minutes, while Minnesota is 11th with 76.7 possessions per 40 minutes.
Hereof, I can only look at the under. The Valkyries will lean on their sturdy defense once more, and they will struggle to score against the Lynx. The under is 9-3 in Golden State’s last 12 outings at home, and the Valkyries haven’t allowed more than 81 points in six straight games overall.
