New York Liberty vs Toronto Tempo Preview
New York produced one of its best performances of the season Friday in Minnesota. The Liberty beat the league-leading Lynx 93-81 behind 24 points and 10 rebounds from Stewart, 18 points and 10 rebounds from Jonquel Jones and 17 points from Sabrina Ionescu.
The victory moved New York to 25-16 and kept the Liberty in the middle of a crowded playoff seeding race.

The question Sunday is not whether New York is better than Toronto. The question is whether the Liberty need to push their stars hard enough to justify laying 14.5 points on the road.
Stewart played 38 minutes Friday after logging heavy minutes during the FIBA Women's World Cup. With New York scheduled to play four games in six days, this matchup is one of the most logical spots to manage her workload.
That does not mean the Liberty will concede anything. New York still has home-court positioning available and has enough depth to win with a more balanced rotation.
Jones gives the Liberty a major interior advantage, Ionescu can stretch Toronto far beyond the three-point line and Marine Johannes can create scoring bursts off the bench.
Toronto is operating with a much thinner group.
Mabrey is out for the remainder of the season with an adductor injury after averaging 20.8 points. Sykes and Morrow are also done for the year, and Conde is unavailable.
The Tempo still competed with Indiana on Friday. Toronto actually stayed within range through three quarters before the Fever pulled away for a 103-85 win.
Laura Juskaite scored 22, Isabelle Harrison had nine rebounds and Kiki Rice continued to handle a larger creation role.
That effort is relevant because Toronto was not overwhelmed from the opening tip despite missing nearly all of its primary perimeter scoring.
The season series is tied 1-1.
New York won the first meeting 97-82 on June 3. Toronto answered with a 93-91 home victory on July 12.
Those games show the range of outcomes. New York has enough offense to create separation, but Toronto has already proven it can make the Liberty uncomfortable at Coca-Cola Coliseum.
The betting records also argue against laying a huge number automatically.
New York is only 15-23 ATS this season, the worst spread record on Sunday's board. Toronto is 17-19 ATS despite its poor straight-up record.
The Liberty have repeatedly been priced like an elite team even when their margins have not justified it.
The current market has moved toward New York. Broader numbers are around -13.5, while the captured board has reached -14.5. The total has also drifted down from roughly 177.5 into the 176 range.
That movement creates more value on the home underdog and less incentive to chase the favorite.
Toronto's defense remains a problem. The Tempo are allowing roughly 94 points per game and have given up almost 95 per game over their last 10.
New York is fully capable of reaching the mid-90s again, especially if Jones dominates the glass and Toronto cannot contain Ionescu around screens.
The WNBA betting trends are more interesting on the total. New York is 23-17 O/U, while Toronto is 23-16.
Those records lean high, but Toronto's injuries make the current scoring environment difficult to compare with its full-season profile.
The side is cleaner because the number gives Toronto room to lose decisively.
Rice has become the Tempo's most important perimeter creator. She is averaging nearly 16 points over the last 10 and has enough downhill ability to generate free throws and interior touches even against better defenses.
Harrison and Nyara Sabally can also keep Toronto competitive on the glass. If the Tempo avoid giving New York repeated second chances, they do not need an exceptional shooting night to stay inside 14.5.
New York's recent defensive improvement is a concern for underdog bettors. The Liberty held Minnesota to 81 and have allowed only 84 points per game over their last 10.
The counter is workload. New York has another game Monday against Atlanta and another Wednesday against the Dream. There is little reason to extend Stewart deep into the fourth quarter if the Liberty build a comfortable lead.
That creates a natural backdoor opportunity.
New York can lead by 18 or 20 in the second half, turn more minutes over to its bench and still allow Toronto to cut the final margin into the low teens.
Game Thesis: New York should win because it owns major advantages in shot creation, size and depth. The betting value is different. The Liberty are 15-23 ATS, the spread has stretched to 14.5 and Toronto has already beaten New York once at home. Toronto +14.5 is the preferred wager.
New York Liberty vs Toronto Tempo Best Bet - Spread: Toronto Tempo +14.5
Toronto is badly depleted, but the current spread gives the home team significant protection.
The Tempo stayed competitive with Indiana for three quarters Friday before losing by 18, and New York has more reason than Indiana did to manage star minutes because of the compressed schedule ahead.
The Liberty have also been one of the league's least profitable spread teams, covering only 15 of 38 graded games.
Toronto does not need to win. It only needs to keep the final margin below 15.
With New York potentially protecting Stewart and Toronto playing its final home game of the season, +14.5 is the better side.
Prediction: New York Liberty 94, Toronto Tempo 83
