Washington Mystics vs New York Liberty Preview

The New York Liberty enter Friday at 11-4 and riding an eight-game winning streak. New York extended the run Wednesday with a dramatic 96-95 road victory over the Chicago Sky, overcoming a difficult offensive night before Sabrina Ionescu delivered the go-ahead three-pointer and game-winning layup in the final seconds.

Jonquel Jones led the Liberty with 19 points, eight rebounds, and three assists against Chicago. Satou Sabally added 17 points off the bench, while New York received 38 reserve points to survive a game in which its defense allowed the Sky to shoot efficiently and remain ahead for much of the night.

The Liberty average 88.9 points per game and continue to receive balanced production from Jones, Breanna Stewart, Sabally, Marine Johannรจs, Pauline Astier, and Ionescu. Ionescu has appeared in only three games because of early-season ankle and back problems, but she returned to the starting lineup Wednesday and played 28 minutes.

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton is questionable because of left knee injury management. Her availability affects New York's perimeter defense and rotation depth, but the Liberty still possess one of the league's deepest collections of wings and frontcourt players.

The Washington Mystics enter at 6-7 after earning an 88-81 road victory over the Connecticut Sun. Washington played without Kiki Iriafen and Shakira Austin but received major performances from Sonia Citron, Michaela Onyenwere, and rookie center Lauren Betts.

Citron finished with 24 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while Onyenwere scored 22. Betts made her first career start and added 13 points as Washington shot 29-for-30 from the free-throw line and maintained control throughout the second half.

Iriafen is expected to return after missing time with a right ankle sprain. She averages 14.6 points and a team-leading 8.9 rebounds, giving Washington another interior scorer and rebounder against New York's powerful frontcourt.

Austin is questionable because of bilateral knee soreness. Her status remains important because Washington must contend with Jones, Stewart, and Sabally inside. If Austin is unavailable, Betts and the Mystics' reserve forwards will again carry larger defensive and rebounding roles.

Historic Head-to-Head Stats and Analysis

New York has won both meetings against Washington this season. The Liberty earned a 98-93 overtime victory in Washington on May 10 before producing a much more comfortable 86-64 win at Barclays Center on June 14.

The first matchup was competitive throughout regulation. Marine Johannรจs scored a career-high 25 points with six three-pointers, while Stewart added 23 points and nine rebounds. Iriafen led Washington with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Austin recorded 16 points and 10 boards.

The June 14 rematch was controlled by New York. The Liberty held Washington to 33.8% shooting, made 11 three-pointers, and received 20 points from Jones. Washington produced only two double-digit scorers and never recovered after New York established control in the first half.

The Mystics enter this third meeting with more confidence after Wednesday's road win, but they face a much more difficult defensive matchup than Connecticut presented. New York can protect the rim, switch across multiple positions, and punish Washington's smaller lineups on the glass.

Game Thesis: New York is the clear straight-up side, but the large spread creates more risk than the moneyline suggests. Washington has received strong recent production from Citron and Onyenwere, while Iriafen's expected return should improve its rebounding. The total offers the cleaner position because New York's defense can limit Washington without requiring the Liberty to maintain an aggressive scoring pace for four quarters.

Moneyline Pick: New York Liberty (-800)

The Liberty are the overwhelming moneyline choice, although the -800 price offers little standalone value. New York has won eight consecutive games and already defeated Washington twice this season.

The Liberty possess advantages in frontcourt size, defensive versatility, shooting depth, and late-game experience. Jones and Stewart can control the paint, while Sabally, Johannรจs, Astier, and Ionescu give New York several secondary scoring and playmaking options.

Washington has shown meaningful improvement and should receive a boost if Iriafen returns. However, the Mystics still face a major challenge generating efficient offense against a New York team that held them to 64 points five days earlier.

Spread Pick: Washington Mystics +13.5 (-110)

Washington +13.5 is the preferred spread side because the current number gives the Mystics significantly more protection than a standard single-digit underdog line. New York is the more likely winner, but the Liberty needed a last-second basket to escape Chicago on Wednesday and may not maintain full intensity with a comfortable late lead.

Citron enters after producing 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Onyenwere has scored at least 17 points in consecutive games. Their perimeter production gives Washington a path to avoid the extended scoring droughts that doomed the Mystics in Sunday's 22-point loss.

Iriafen's expected return should also improve Washington's rebounding and second-chance scoring. The Mystics do not need to threaten an outright upset for this spread to cash; a New York victory in the range of 10 to 12 points would be enough.

โญ Best Bet - Total Pick: Under 168.5 (-108)

The Under 168.5 is the strongest play. The teams combined for only 150 points in Sunday's meeting, with New York's defense holding Washington to 64 points and 33.8% shooting.

Washington scored 88 against Connecticut, but 29 of those points came from the free-throw line. The Mystics are unlikely to receive the same volume of free throws against a more disciplined New York defense with greater size and mobility around the basket.

The Liberty can score efficiently, but their depth and heavy favorite status may lead to a broader rotation if they establish control. Ionescu is still rebuilding rhythm after an injury-interrupted start, while New York does not need to force an aggressive pace to win comfortably.

A result around 88-75 or 90-76 would give the Liberty another clear victory while remaining below the available total.

Top Player Prop Picks

Jonquel Jones Over 13.5 Points (-105) Jones averages 14.2 points and has exceeded this line in three consecutive games, scoring 16 against Atlanta, 20 against Washington, and 19 against Chicago.

Washington may again be without Austin or have her operating below full strength. That gives Jones a favorable interior matchup, particularly when New York forces switches or creates deep post position through its half-court actions.

Jones also provides three-point value, making it difficult for Washington's centers to remain near the rim. She needs only a performance near her season average to clear the available line.

Sonia Citron Over 16.5 Points (-105) Citron leads Washington with 17.4 points per game and enters after scoring 24 against Connecticut. She attempted 12 field goals and 11 free throws in that victory, showing her ability to create points even without relying on three-point shooting.

The potential return of Iriafen should prevent New York from directing all of its defensive attention toward Citron. Washington still needs Citron to carry a major scoring role, especially if Austin remains unavailable.

New York held her to 12 points Sunday, but the projected shot volume and free-throw opportunities make the Over playable at a number close to her season average.

Sabrina Ionescu Under 14.5 Points (-125) Ionescu has scored 26 total points across three appearances this season and enters after finishing with 10 points against Chicago. She made the two biggest shots of the game but did not score until late in the third quarter.

New York has not needed Ionescu to carry a high-volume scoring role because Jones, Stewart, Sabally, Johannรจs, and Astier have supplied consistent offense. The Liberty can also manage her workload if they establish a large second-half lead.

Ionescu remains capable of clearing the line through three-point shooting, but her current role and limited game sample make the Under the stronger side at 14.5.
