The San Diego Padres clash with the Pittsburgh Pirates as the NL foes continue a three-game series on Tuesday night. The Padres are benefiting from fantastic pitching and will have Blake Snell take the mound. The Pirates are heating up at the plate and have tabbed Chad Kuhl as the starter. The Padres took Monday's series opener 6-2.
Snell Targets First Win, Padres Dominant Pitching Resumes
Blake Snell will make his third start of the season, aiming for his first win in a Padres’ uniform. Snell is pitching well with his new team. The veteran right-hander tossed four shutout innings against the Diamondbacks to open the season and conceded two runs in five innings against the Giants last time out in a game the Padres lost. Snell has only given up six hits and owns a 1.86 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP through two starts. The former Tampa Bay Ray registered a 3.24 ERA in 2020. Snell conceded six runs in five innings in his lone career start against Pittsburgh.
San Diego has lived up to their lofty expectations so far, winning seven of their first ten games entering Monday’s action. They have done so without the services of Fernando Tatis Jr. who should return from the IL later this week. The pitching has been dominant as they led the Majors in several categories including WHIP.
Wil Myers continues to be a big threat in the middle of the lineup, sporting a .314 average with six RBI’s and a dazzling 1 OPS. The 30-year old right fielder has recorded at least one base hit in all but one game this season. Myers went just 2 for 18 against the Pirates in 2019. Fernando Tatis Jr. remains out of the lineup.
The Padres rank 22nd in the Majors with an average of 3.90 runs per game. They are sporting a Major League-best 1.78 team ERA.
Kuhl Shelled by Reds, Pirates Win First Series of Season
Chad Kuhl will get the nod for the third time of the year, seeking his first win. Kuhl was roughed up in his previous start, squandering five runs (four earned) in four innings against the Reds in an 11-4 defeat. The veteran right-hander was solid in his season debut, limiting the Cubs to only two runs (one earned), and enters with a 6.43 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP in his two outings. Kuhl has filed a 4.60 ERA in his three career starts against the Padres.
The Pirates have some momentum after coming away with the series win against the Cubs this past weekend propelled by a barrage of runs. The Pirates had lost six straight clashes before winning the final two games against Chicago. Young slugger Ke’Bryan Hayes remains out of action.
Bryan Reynolds has collected at least one base hit in seven of nine games on the season. The third-year outfielder had a terrific 2019 rookie season but wasn't been able to make a big impact in 2020. Reynolds is hitting .324 with three RBI’s and an .850 OPS this season and collected four base hits in Sunday’s win over the Cubs.
The Pirates are scoring an average of only 3.78 runs on the season, pegging them down at 23rd in the Major Leagues. Pittsburgh enters with a 5.45 team ERA, placing them 28th overall.
The San Diego Padres are:
- 9-1 in their last 10 road games against a right-handed starter.
- 4-1 in their last 5 games overall.
- 5-1 in their last 6 games in the second game of a series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are:
- 1-4 in their last 5 home games against a left-handed starter.
- 2-6 in their last 8 Tuesday games.
- 8-21 in their last 29 games in the second game of a series.
Best Bets for this Game
Full-Game Side Bet
The Padres are enjoying a very promising start to the season and just completed the sweep over the Rangers prior to this series before winning Monday's series opener 6-2. The pitching has been phenomenal as they led the Majors in ERA and WHIP. While the Pirates showed some offense against the Cubs this past weekend, they are up against Blake Snell who is hungry for his first win in a Padres uniform.
Furthermore, Pirates’ starter Chad Kuhl has struggled through two starts, allowing seven runs (five earned) in his seven innings of work. The Pirates have lost seven out of their last nine games with all of those losses occurring by two or more runs.
Full-Game Total Pick
The Pirates’ bats had a solid series against the Cubs however they will be one of the lowest-scoring teams in the Majors this season and they have tallied four or fewer runs in six out of their last eight games overall. Snell has been sharp, conceding only two runs in his 9.2 innings. The under is 7-0-1 in the Pirates’ last eight home games against a team with a winning record.
In addition, the Padres haven’t been scoring a ton of runs this season which is why I believe this under will cash. They have collected three or fewer runs in six out of their last seven games overall as they continue to play without Tatis Jr. The under is 8-2 in the Padres’ 10 games played on the season entering Monday.
Full-Game Prop Bet
The Pirates’ bats are in for a quiet night. The Padres have only allowed a combined five runs in the two games started by Snell this season. San Diego has now limited their opponent to three or fewer runs in all but two games this season. The bullpen leads the Majors with a stunning 1 ERA.
First Five Innings Prop Prediction
I am taking Blake Snell to record the win. Snell is winless in two starts, however, he is pitching well. I expect him to benefit from runs as I expect three or four runs from San Diego against Chad Kuhl then a few more agains the bullpen. Snell has only given up six hits and has tallied 16 K’s in his two outings.
