San Diego hosts the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday at Petco Park to kick off their weekday series. The Padres are coming off of a surprising series against San Francisco, where they beat down the opposition over the weekend. The Dodgers are still rebounding from their bad start to the season.
Dodgers lose Forsythe for two weeks
Los Angeles had a rough time against Arizona, but they did finally snap a three-game losing skid by salvaging the series finale on Sunday, 7-2. Prior to that, the D’backs outscored them 17-8 in the first two games. Second baseman Logan Forsythe (.174 avg) has been placed on the 10-day DL with a fractured toe after Saturday’s game.
Probable starter: Left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-0, 2.79 ERA)
Ryu will be making his third start of the season after picking up a victory against Oakland on Tuesday. He allowed just one hit through six innings and registered a solid pitching ratio of eight strikeouts to one walk. The Dodgers have had far less wins they thought at this point in the season, but they were able to hold on to an easy 4-0 victory.
Padres score 20 runs in three days after being shutout
After dropping the series opener 7-0 against San Francisco, San Diego stormed back in a big way to take the last three games. The finale was the most impressive of them all, crushing the Giants by a 10-1 margin. First baseman Eric Hosmer (.288 avg) went 0-for-8 in the first two games and was held back with some back issues, but he should be back on Monday.
Probable starter: Left-hander Robbie Erlin (0-1, 2.38 ERA)
Erlin will make his first start of the season after opening the 2018 campaign in the bullpen. He’s made five appearances so far, putting in 11.1 innings of work with a relatively impressive ratio of nine strikeouts to two walks. He looked especially good in his prior outing against San Francisco. While that was a loss, he gave up just two hits over 3.1 innings.
- 29-12 in their last 51 games against left-handed starters
- 4-0 in Ryu’s last 4 road starts against teams with a losing record
- 3-8 in their last 11 Monday games
- 1-6 in Erlin’s last 7 starts
San Diego has looked pretty good in recent days, but it should be taken with a grain of salt. They’ll have a starter on the mound that opened the season in the bullpen and the Dodgers will eventually rattle off consecutive wins.
