The Oakland Athletics are one of the hottest teams in the big leagues and will aim for a seventh consecutive win when they host the Detroit Tigers in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers will give the nod to Matt Boyd, and the A’s will reply with Chris Bassitt. Oakland leads the series 3-0 including a 7-0 win on Saturday.
Boyd Dazzles, Tigers Conclude Road Trip
Matt Boyd will get the nod for the fourth time of the year. Boyd has been one of the best pitchers in the AL so far. He just limited the Astros to only one run in 6.2 innings last time out in an 8-2 victory to improve his record to 2-1. The veteran southpaw has only allowed four runs in his 19.1 innings of work, leading to a stifling 1.86 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. The A’s have given Boyd some trouble as he has squandered seven runs in 11.1 career innings.
Overall it has been a mediocre start to the season for this rebuilding Tigers squad. They completed the surprising three-game road sweep over the Astros prior to this series highlighted by a combined 20 runs. They are concluding a long 10 game road trip in this game.
Akil Baddoo, what can’t he do? The 22-year old rookie is off to a spectacular start to his Major League career, registering a .294 average with four big flys along with 11 RBI’s and a 1 OPS. Baddoo’s production comes as a surprise considering he was a rule five pick. He is 0 for 7 at the plate in this series.
The Tigers are averaging 3.79 runs, placing them 25th in the big leagues. They own a poor 5.10 team ERA, landing them down at 25th overall.
Bassitt Earns First Victory, A's Win Another Series
Chris Bassitt will make his fourth start of the season in this one. Bassitt came through with his best outing of the season last time out, holding the D-Backs to only two runs in five innings, resulting in his first win of the season. The veteran right-hander struggled against the Dodgers prior to his latest performance and enters with a 4.96 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP accompanied by a 1-2 record in 16.1 innings of action. Bassitt has fared well against the Tigers in his six career meetings, recording a 3.35 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.
Well, the Athletics have rebounded from their disastrous start to the season. They lost their first six games of the season and have now won a remarkable seven consecutive games. The offense has played a key factor in their winning streak.

Matt Chapman is heating up at the plate, collecting seven RBI’s in his last five games overall. The 27-year old third baseman was slumping in a big way in the first 10 or so games and is only hitting .200 with eight RBI’s and a .740 OPS on the year. Chapman is 3 for 11 with four RBI’s in this series.
The A's rank 15th in the Majors with an average of 4.21 runs per game. They enter with a 5.20 ERA, landing them down at 25th overall.
The Detroit Tigers are:
- No Key Trends
The Oakland Athletics are:
- 1-4 in their last 5 Sunday games.
- 3-8 in their last 11 home games.
Best Bets for this Game
Full-Game Side Bet
Tigers starter Matt Boyd has been dominant through his three performances, allowing only a total of four runs in 19.1 innings including a gem against Houston in which he conceded one run. The Tigers have come away with the win in two of his three starts.
Furthermore, A’s starter Chris Bassitt hasn’t been nearly as effective as Boyd, posting a 4.96 ERA in his three outings. He was lucky to only give up two runs in five innings in his latest start considering he walked five batters. The Tigers are due for some runs after two consecutive shutouts.
Full-Game Total Pick
This has the makings of a low-scoring battle. Matt Boyd is pitching deep into games which is key as the Tigers bullpen has been a weakness. He went seven innings against the Twins before pitching 6.2 innings in his latest start. The under is 4-0-1 in the A’s last five home games against a team with a losing record.
In addition, while I expect a decent performance at the plate against Bassitt, the right-hander should keep the Tigers in check considering he owns a 3.35 ERA against Detroit. The under is also 10-3-1 in the last 14 meetings between these foes.
Full-Game Prop Bet
The under on the Athletics team total is an attractive prop. The Tigers have allowed three or fewer runs in all three games started by Boyd this season. Boyd has yet to give up a home run this season. The A’s bats have been inconsistent and they stand 22nd with a .219 team batting average.
First Five Innings Prop Prediction
I am going with the under on the three-inning total. The A’s have done almost nothing at the plate in the first three innings. They have only managed a combined 11 runs in that span. The Tigers have 18 runs in innings 1-3 and Bassist has posted 6.00 ERA in that span.
