Houston Astros (6-7) vs. Seattle Mariners (9-5)

It is the final contest of a three-game set between the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners on Sunday. Seattle won the opening game of this series, 6-5. This preview was written prior to the conclusion of Saturday’s contest.

Seattle is the favorite in this contest at -115. The odds for Houston are set at -105. The Mariners have won the last two games between these teams. However, Houston is 6-4 in the last 10 meetings.

Astros Woes Continue

With Friday’s loss, Houston has now dropped six games in a row. The one bright side of the loss was that they scored more than two runs for the second straight game. During the first five games of their losing streak, they had been held to two runs in three of those games but scored four in the finale against Detroit and five on Friday. However, they have given up six or more runs in six straight games.

Houston is fifth in runs scored at 5.31 and is 15th in runs allowed per game at 4.54. They are hitting .264 as a club, sixth overall.

Houston is scheduled to start right-handed pitcher Jake Odorizzi on Sunday. The right-hander has made just one start, allowing five runs on seven hits and 3.1 innings in his start against Detroit on April 13. Odorizzi did not walk any batters while striking out four, but he gave up three homeruns in that game.

Kyle Tucker leads the Astros with four homers and 11 RBI, but is hitting just .200. José Altuve is off to a fast start, hitting .318 with 11 runs scored and 14 hits. Unfortunately, Altuve is out indefinitely due to Covid-19 protocols. Also out are third baseman Alex Bregman, second baseman Robel Garcia, catcher Martin Maldonado, and eight members of their pitching staff. That includes Justin Verlander, who is done for the season.

Smooth Sailing for Mariners

With Friday’s victory, Seattle has now won six of their last seven games, catapulting them to the top of the AL West Division. The Mariners have shown a real knack for winning the close games, winning four of those games by a single run and two others by two runs.

Seattle is 13th in runs per game at 4.50 and 23rd in runs allowed per contest at 5.00. They are hitting .237 as a team, 14th overall.

The Mariners have not named their starter for this game. If the game is turned over to the Seattle bullpen, that is not necessarily a bad thing. They are eighth in bullpen ERA at 3.40 as the relievers are a combined 6-3 with six saves in nine opportunities. They have a 1.19 WHIP.

Kyle Seager leads the team in RBI with 12 to go along with two homers and a .294 batting average. Mitch Haniger is hitting .351 with four homers, 11 runs scored, and 11 RBI. Seattle also has a number of key injuries, including outfielders Jake Fraley and Kyle Lewis as well as second baseman Shed Long.

Some find it troubling when a team has not named their starter, but I do not necessarily see this as a bad thing. This creates a challenge for the opposing team as they do not know who to prepare for. Plus, Seattle has a quality bullpen that is deep, so if they make this a bullpen day, they should have a great opportunity to hold Houston down.

The Astros are struggling right now. It does not help that they have a starter going who was shelled in his last start. I am not saying that Seattle will rough him up like that, but three homers in 3.1 innings is a scary thought.

Prediction: Take the Seattle Mariners (-115)

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

The total is set at 9.0. These teams have gone under in five of the last six meetings, including five of the last six meetings in Seattle. However, the trends have been going over for the teams individually. Seattle has gone over in seven of their last 10 games while Houston has gone over in four of their last five.

I am expecting the Astros to give up six runs in this game. That then leads to how money runs Seattle will give up. The Mariners should get another great performance out of this bullpen, but I expect them to give up four runs. Take Seattle the win, 6-4.

Prediction: Go over 9.0 (-110)
