The Cincinnati Reds clash with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the series opener on Tuesday night. The Diamondbacks have some momentum after winning two games over the Nats this weekend and will have Zac Gallen on the hill. The Reds are looking to rebound from a series loss and will call on Luis Castillo. Arizona won two of three over the Reds last week.
Gallen Shines in Season Debut, D-Backs' Hit with Injuries
Zac Gallen will start the series opener for the D-Backs. Gallen made his season debut against the Athletics on Tuesday after a stint on the IL and was stellar, conceding one run on three hits in four innings in a game Arizona lost. He exited after just 82 pitches due to a pitch count. The fourth-year right-hander had a tremendous 2020 season, registering a 2.75 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP to go with a 3-2 record in 12 outings. Gallen squandered three runs in 5.2 innings in his only career meeting against the Reds.
The Diamondbacks continue a long 10-game road trip. They were able to win two games against the Nationals this weekend. They are dealing with some key injuries as Tim Locastro and Christian Walker are out of action along with one of their best hitters in Ketel Marte.
Watch for Eduardo Escobar who has accumulated a remarkable six RBI’s against the Reds last week and now leads the team with six home runs and 11 RBI’s. The 32-year old third baseman drove in another three runs this week and is the team's best hitter right now.
The Diamondbacks are averaging 4.56 runs per game on the season, ranking them 10th overall. They enter with a 4.74 team ERA, pegging them 23rd in the Majors.
Castillo Stumbles, Reds Cools Down
The Reds will have Luis Castillo start this game. Castillo wasn’t at his best in his previous outing, squandering four runs including two home runs in five innings against the Giants, finishing with a no-decision in a game the Reds lost. The talented ace has struggled in two of his three performances this season and enters with a poor 7.04 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP as a result. Castillo has posted mediocre results in his four career meetings against Arizona, recording a 2-4 record and a 4.25 ERA in six starts.
The Reds have cooled off from their hot start, especially at the plate, but were able to win two of three over the Indians this past weekend after losing their two previous series against the D-Backs and Giants.
It hasn’t been a productive season for Eugenio Suarez so far, although he does have four base hits along with two RBI’s against the D-Backs this season. The 29-year old third baseman hit 15 big flys in 58 games last season and has two homers along with five RBI’s this year.
The Reds continue to lead the Major Leagues with an average of 6.07 runs per game. They have filed a 4.26 team ERA, landing them 19th overall.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are:
- 5-0 in Gallen's last 5 starts in the first game of a series.
The Cincinnati Reds are:
- 1-4 in their last 5 games against the NL West.
Best Bets for this Game
Full-Game Side Bet
The Reds have their ace, Luis Castillo, on the mound and the Diamondbacks have a potential ace in Zac Gallen on the hill in this one. Gallen features a stifling 2.77 ERA in his 156 career innings pitched at the Major League level and held the Athletics to just one run in his season debut last week. Castillo is struggling as seen in his 7.04 ERA.
Furthermore, the Reds have not been nearly as dangerous recently, losing five out of their last eight clashes overall as the offense has been kept in check. Arizona won two of three over this Reds team last week and I like their chances with Gallen starting this game.
Full-Game Total Pick
This pitching matchup should lead to a low-scoring clash. The Reds have now scored three or fewer runs in six out of their last eight games overall and Gallen has been very reliable over his young career. The D-Backs’ bullpen has also been a strength, registering a 3.84 ERA. The under is 8-1-1 in Gallen’s last 10 starts against a team with a winning record.
In addition, Luis Castillo should give the Reds six innings and Arizona is playing without key hitters in Ketel Marte along with Christian Walker. The under is 5-0 in the D-Back’s last five road games against a team with a home winning % above .600.
Full-Game Prop Bet
The under on the Reds team total is worth a look. The Diamondbacks’ pitching staff was able to limit the Reds to only a combined nine runs in the three meetings last week. Cincy has not been able to score with consistency after their remarkable start and this is a tough matchup against Gallen and a bullpen that has been among the best in the Majors.
First Five Innings Prop Prediction
I am taking Zac Gallen to record the win. Gallen held a hot A’s lineup to one run and he should go deeper into the game in his second start of the year after he had a pitch count last week. Also, I expect him to benefit from run support as Castillo has not been sharp, conceding 12 runs in his 15.1 innings pitched.
